Actually very different from today's CPU. With the e500's you had to pick and choose which flights you wanted to upgrade. You only had a limited number of them to used based on how much UA metal distance you flew. System was designed to not supply you enough to upgrade every flight. Yes you could buy more if you were short so was actually a revenue generator. Lower tier members actually had a better chance to get an upgrade as upper tier did not always want to upgrade some flights. And the amount needed was also based on distance of flight, hence the 500 name. Each coupon would upgrade up to 500 miles.
