This. Still, ATW is a pretty darn obscure airport.

On the other hand, anyone in a position to know whether United is indeed planning on pulling out of ATW probably knows where it is.

Shame on you Bob...

Go back and finish your memorizing.

Air Wisconsin lost a lot of stations in the process. I believe they lost GRB, ATW, and MSN. Not sure if there were more. It was my understanding that those companies will be able to do the same work with less people.
The problem wasn't the number of people, but the seniority levels at those stations. I believe the average Seniority at ATW was something like 18 years.

The stations Air Wisconsin lost are: LIT, XNA, BIS, TVC, RSW, and MSN.

The rest of the ones they ground handle at (including PWM) end the current contracts in September. Still awaiting the RFP results.

It's pretty easy to Google the airport code - I do that frequently when reading FT.

Many other FT abbreviations are harder to Google.

I for one certainly hope they do not pull out of Appleton. But I would not be completely surprised. Two weeks ago I was on ORD-ATW on a weekday morning with about 10 other passengers and when I returned to ORD that same evening the load was even lighter.

But sometimes the flights are packed and fares are sky high, so perhaps the route is profitable. Or perhaps the route is "strategic" for reasons we don't know about.

This was part of a multi-leg journey. I wouldn't recommend flying to Appleton for a trip originating and ending in Chicago.

Yes I understand seniority was a factor, as was the fact that Regional Elite and Delta Global Services arent union jobs, but there will be significantly fewer people at the new companies for the stations I listed.

Flight loads / profitability are irrelevant in this decision.

The key is who the congressperson for the Appleton area is, and whether they have the clout/seniority to keep having ATW service subsidized.

Well Air Wisconsin didn't lose Green Bay, so that's irrelevant.

I've heard from multiple sources that the ONLY reason Air Wisconsin lost Appleton was seniority was too high.

If seniority was taken out of the equation, Air Wisconsin would've easily beat Regional Elite. Now, perhaps because Regional Elite already ground handle for Delta in ATW, they made an incremental cost bid, which helps lower cost. It will be real interesting to see who wins the DL contract in ATW. If Air Wisconsin wins it, they may also retain UA, if Delta's incremental cost bid will be ruined by the fact that they lose DL.

Everyone I know in Oshkosh flies out of GRB or ATW... I have yet to fly out of MKE since moving to OSH. Have not seen any better pricing by flying out of MKE. I do enjoy the "dead" ATW airport though... super easy in/out with little or no waiting in any lines.

I lived in Fond du Lac for a long time, was rarely able to justify the extra cost to fly out of ATW, it was generally MKE or GRB, the first half of the year GRB was running 2x the cost of MKE. Must be the destinations you're going to, but with WN and FL in MKE keeping prices lower, it had been a no brainer.

As a UA elite who happens through ATW 2x-4x per year...it is a great place for me to burn miles and a very expensive "cash" airport.
