Announcement 27 March 2012
Hi Everyone, obviously I'm a lilttle late to the game here, but, as you can see, today we’ll officially be introducing the new United MileagePlus Club Card. I know there’s been speculation on this, and I’m sure there will be follow-up questions. To start, here are some key highlights of the United MileagePlus Club Card:
For those of you who already have a credit card with Chase, here’s some more information:
For a full list of details, and to apply for the new Club Card, please visit MileagePlusClub.com.
As always, please let us know your questions.

United Airlines
- As the card name suggests, a full United Club membership is included. If you already have a United Club membership, once approved for the card, you’ll be refunded for any unused portion of your membership as long as the refund is $15 or more (the refund is applicable to annual and three year memberships)
- There are some key benefits, too. Just like our Presidential Plus Card, the new Club Card is designed to enhance your total travel experience. Here’s a list of the benefits (details for each can be found here):
- Earn 50% more miles on ALL purchases. This is a new benefit. Cardmembers will earn at least 50% more miles on all purchases with the new Club Card. Specifically, for each $1 spent, Cardmembers will earn 1.5 miles, and when purchasing United tickets, the miles jump to 2 miles for every $1 spent on tickets
- Free first and second standard checked bags for the Cardmember and one companion
- Premier Access travel services, including priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage handling
- Book award tickets close to the departure date without a fee. We’ll waive the fee for booking award tickets 21 days or less prior to departure. This benefit is reserved for certain Cardmembers and certain Premier levels
- Get complimentary upgrades on award tickets (applicable for Premier members). Cardmembers who are also Premier members will be eligible to receive their complimentary upgrade benefits (where available) even when traveling on an award ticket in economy class
- No foreign transaction fees
- Cardmembers will have access to last-seat award availability (applicable to general members)
- As a Cardmember, miles don’t expire
- Invitation to special Avis benefits and Hyatt Platinum Elite status
- Inside Access from Chase. As a Cardmember, you will be delighted with opportunities to attend private, curated, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Visit InsideAccess.com to learn about upcoming events
- Access to the Chase’s Luxury Hotels and Resorts Collection special rates and benefits
- Premier travel and purchase protection, including primary auto rental collision damage coverage
- 24/7 Concierge Services
For those of you who already have a credit card with Chase, here’s some more information:
- Already have a Mileage Plus Club Visa Card? You’ll find that the key differences are that the new Club Card has the added benefits of free checked bags, Premier Access, 50% mileage bonus on all purchases, award tickets close to departure date without a fee and complimentary upgrades on award tickets (applicable for Premier members where available). The new Club Card does not award Premier Qualifying Miles for purchases. More specific information about your current card and the new Club Card will arrive in the mail in late April
- Already have the Presidential Plus Card? The key difference is that the Presidential Plus Card awards Flexible Premier Qualifying Miles for purchases whereas the new Club Card awards a 50% mileage bonus on all purchases. Both cards earn 2 miles for every $1 spent on United tickets. If you’re interested in changing over to the new Club Card, simply call the number on the back of your current card to discuss your options. While the Presidential Plus Card and its benefits will continue, we are not taking any additional applications for new Presidential Plus accounts
- Already have another United card from Chase? If you currently have another United card from Chase and want to switch, call the number on the back of your current card to discuss your options
For a full list of details, and to apply for the new Club Card, please visit MileagePlusClub.com.
As always, please let us know your questions.

I guess the message is: If you want a CC with PQM/EQM move on over to AMEX and Delta...I might just have to do that...

1. On this thread on FT I'm seeing tons of ads for first year free on the Explorer card.
2. Click one of these ads
3. There are tabs at the top, one of which is for the Club card. Click that and it will give you the offer with the first year fee waived.

However, I just tried the same steps again and only got the $95 offer, so it seems like YMMV.

Hi Jake Gittes, there is no timing set for an EMV version of the Card. But, we hope to add this in the future.

1.5 miles vs. FEQMS
Weird question, but I wonder if for me it wouldn't make sense to keep my PPlus card and get one of these new Club cards..
I spend $50k/mo on PPlus, so the FEQMs are awesome, but there is a point of limited returns after I reach enough FEQMs banked to get me to Plat every year for the next three years (since they expire).
But once I hit this threshold, I'd move over to this new card for 1.5 miles per $ spent; and rack up an extra 300k regular miles per year assuming the same spend.
I wonder if I could get both cards from Chase, but get the United Club card free, since I already have club access...

Club Card
Thanks for the update Shannon -- if a PresPlus member wants to convert, can Chase wave a magic wand and make it happen or do you have to go through a whole new application process?
Also for those who are currently locked in at the $375 level from the first runs of the PPlus card, will that carry over if we convert to the new card?

Talked to a Chase rep and he said if you want to convert your Presidential Plus MC over to the new Club Card (Visa), you DO NOT have to apply through a new application. They'll just issue you a new card and account number since it's a VISA instead of Mastercard. Reason being all Visa cards start with the number "4" and all Mastercard starts with the number "5".
Hope this helps.

I was told, and Shannon confirmed just before that you will not get a new account number if you convert, meaning keeping the card a MC is an option.

In the past year I've been in Australia, CHina, Korea, Dubai, Egypt, Thailand, the UK, and the US, and not having EMV was never, ever a problem.

The sole exception I have found: some (but not all — it depends on the company) French toll road unmanned machines do not accept a swipe card, but then they do not accept UK Amex chip-and-pin and UK Visa debit chip-and-pin cards either. Only Visa credit will do.
Most European chip-and-pin machines have a slot down the side to swipe the card in addition to the chip-reader slot. If they do not, the operator will have a swiping slot down the side of the terminal monitor or on the terminal keyboard. All you have to do is tell them it's a swipe card. If you don't know how to say that in the local language, a gesture will do the trick. I've never had a problem, as long as a swiping slot actually exists (it didn't in Provence). Often they will look at the card, see that there is no chip, and swipe without being asked, but if I know how to say it the transaction goes more smoothly.
However, I agree that it would be highly preferable to have a chip-and-pin card.

The card's benefits are so underwhelming...seriously, only a $95 credit sign-up bonus?

This is nonsense. I have only had my card rejected once (at a rural restaurant in deepest Provence) in the past 10 years. It has been accepted in the UK, Italy, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland.....

For the most part I've had little trouble in restaurants... except in Tarbes & Pau (Pyrenees) where several insisted they couldn't take a swiped card, even though there readers clearly had the slot on the side. In one case, a bakery just outside of Pau, I even had the assistance of a native who was trying to explain to the woman how to use my card with her machine. She'd have none of it. A cynical person would suggest that there are advantages to businesses to cash transactions in countries with very high tax rates.
There's also the issue that you cannot use a non-chipped card in the automated ticket machines in train & metro stations nor for unattended gas stations (commonly found on Sundays when you're trying to return your rental car with a full tank of gas).
On the other hand, I've had no trouble at all using my swiped card on tollways in any region I've visited.
Whatever the case, I'd love to have a chipped card that carries no currency conversion penalties.

E+?
If this card offered E+ at booking, it would be an excellent alternative to flying 50K or 75K miles...

Just like the Amex Gold PR vs the Amex Plat. Apples to Oranges.
The Centurion is a benefits (not really a rewards) card too, but plenty of people still want that one for the paper benefits (and possibly the DYKWIA benefits too).
