Chase now offering MP cards with EMV chip (Explorer, Club, PresPlus)

Chase has offered the new-to-US EMV chip in several of their products for some time, but as of today (according to Chase), you can request a replacement card for the United MileagePlus Club Visa card that also includes the chip.

The chip will offer an easier purchase experience at some merchants outside of the US which don't process swipe cards, but still doesn't allow use at unattended terminals overseas (train stations, etc.) which require use of a PIN.

The chip also readies your card for more secure transactions as merchants stateside begin to replace point of sale terminals and card readers. That is picking up momentum this year. You don't lose any functionality, as the card still has a magnetic stripe.

I just happened to be talking to Chase today for the first time in months, asked about the chip, got the answer, and requested the new card. I don't know if it also applies to the Explorer card.

Happy spending!

Great news, if true! ^

However, both the Chase & UA websites are still showing unchipped cards.

No update on the PP card yet. Is this chip & pin or chip & signature?

Chip & signature. In other words, really no better than a mag strip.

Chip and Signature. Chase (along with all major US issuers) has chosen to start there to make the transition smoother.

Using the chip rather than the mag stripe makes it harder for your card to be cloned.

If by no better, you mean immensely better, then yes. I'd agree. LOL, the chip is the most important part - it solves counterfeit card fraud. The PIN solves stolen card fraud, which is far rarer.

I don't want chip-and-PIN for fraud. I want it for France.

I was told by Chase that the PP card would not be issued with a chip...Don't know if the person telling me this actually knew for sure or was guessing.

When I checked into a hotel in Rome last fall, their system kept rejecting my Sapphire card every time she swiped it. When she tried using the chip, it went through. YMMV.

Agreed. While everyone else spends 30 seconds at the machine in a train station, I have to get in the 45 minute line. Why does the US have to stay 10 years behind the rest of the world.

I was told something similar and heard it had to do with PP being a MC not Visa (?).

I have MC's with the chip so it's not an issue

Probably it's a legacy product and chase is placing the card replacement at the final wave right before regulation kicks in

My Club card is still Mastercard (I upgraded from an Explorer card) and I just ordered the Chip card.
