MCT for EWR (2012)

https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights

United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

EWR Shuttle Bus?

One other question: What are the hours and gates does the UA secure shuttle run? Have a friend going from A->C (UX -> UA)

It goes from A28 to C71. I think it goes from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM but I'm not able to verify those hours on the EWR website. The search is more difficult than what I thought it should be.

OK, Intra-Terminal A transfers.
Can one WALK from A1 to A2 while staying airside?
What about A3 to A2?

And to add to that point leave the A concourse you're in and walk briskly to the other A concourse security since TSA often runs at a snail speed and only offers TSA lite (I.e. don't remove items from bag but you share lane with elderly and young people). Took me over an hour once to clear that security with TSA pre, I was not amused.

Safe Travels,

James

And at 6 PM on a Thursday ten days ago, there was only one lane open (no TSA PRE lane) in Terminal A Concourse 2 and we had to remove items from bag (liquids and computers) but we did get to keep our shoes on.

I was advised by a nice FTer that I should have entered in Terminal C and taken the bus. But I guess it's not such a good option for passengers trying to get to Concourse 2 from Concourse 1 or 3.

FYI - the P3 long term parking lot officially closed at the beginning of this month to make way for Terminal 1 construction. This leaves the P4 garage as the only Terminal-adjacent long term parking option.

Help Navigating EWR Please

First Polaris trip coming up finally! Used miles for Business class seats FCO-EWR-LAX, with 3 hours hours between flights. I was looking at the EWR maps, and can't quite tell. I imagine we'll arrive an an International terminal (B?) and first have to go through passport/customs? (We have Global Entry if there's a different area for that)
Then a shuttle to a different terminal, (C?).
Security again at the new terminal?
I see the Polaris Lounge is around gates C2-C20...if my LAX flight happens to depart from a non-C gate, is there airside transport from nearby the lounge to the other terminals?
Thanks so much!

To answer your questions, at EWR you'll be arriving in Terminal B (all UA international arrivals go there) where you'll clear customs and immigration then be dumped out in the check in area for Terminal B. There is a small sign which indicates where the Global Entry area is, just follow that. Unlike the European Union and other countries in the world, checked bags will not automatically transfer on to your final destination. Hence, if you have checked bags you'll need to pick them up from the carousel at Terminal B, then follow signs to the transfer desk to have them transferred on to your LAX flight. Sometimes the transfer area is full of baggage. In that case you'll carry your bags with you to the next terminal which will be Terminal C as EWR->LAX is considered a UA Mainline flight and all Mainline flights take off from Terminal C. From there you'll clear TSA security (if you have Global Entry, make sure your boarding pass has pre-check on it to skip the hassle/line). Once inside Terminal C you can walk towards gate C102 where you'll find the Polaris lounge. The lounge is accessible to you since you're arriving from a Polaris flight and from what I hear can be a wonderful way to kill several hours with a-la-carte dining, sleeping rooms and showers.

On a side note, yes UA does offer a shuttle to move you between Terminal A and C of EWR within the secure area but again you won't need it since EWR->LAX takes off from Terminal C.

Safe Travels,

James Simpson

EWR international arrivals can be at either the B or C terminal. Both terminals have a customs and immigration facility.

If arriving in B, you can take a short walk (outdoors) or the overhead airtrain to terminal C. Terminal B arrivals only add a few minutes due to the terminal change.

Flying DUB-EWR-YYZ next month. I assume I will land in a domestic gate in C since DUB has pre-clearance. EWR-YYZ is on AC out of A1 (or is it A3?). I have a few hours between flights, but want to maximize my time at the Polaris lounge. From the lounge, would it be quicker to take the bus behind security to A2 and then head to A1 from there. Or would it be quicker to take the land-side train? (Given that I have to go through security either way, I'm *guessing* transferring land-side will be quicker. And presumably my bags will transfer automatically.

Supposing you go through pre-clearance at DUB then yes you are correct. You'll land at terminal C, with baggage being transferred on to your final destination YYZ (you should confirm with check in agent there). Polaris lounge is located near Gate C102 which you'll have access to since you're on arrival (your aircraft will usually arrive somewhere between gates C70 and C110).

Sadly, for your connection with AC, they uses a different concourse than UA in EWR and that concourses is not connected to any other concourse airside. It's up to you whether to you want to take the airside bus or outside terminal, but keep in mind that you'll need to leave the secure area and clear security for that AC flight again. Security at the AC concourse in EWR is notorious for being slow (i.e. it took me an hour to clear it once and I'm TSA pre-check) so ensure you budget enough time for that. There is an Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge at that concourse (just after security) although I'd rate it at below the domestic United Clubs.

Alternatively depending on how your flight was booked you may want to look into rebooking the last leg as a UX leg instead, that way you can catch the convenient UA shuttle that drops you off at the UX concourse airside. From what I hear the Polaris lounge at EWR is worth spending a few hours (i.e. a-la-carte dining, shower rooms, sleeping rooms, etc.).

Hope that provides some insight.

Safe Travels,

James

EWR Polaris Lounge with SWISS business flight

I'm flying SWISS business class EWR-ZRH. I have TSA Pre but SWISS is does not participate in Pre. Is there a better way than the following to explore the United Polaris lounge?

1. Check bag at Terminal B
2. Take landside shuttle to Terminal C
2. Go through non-pre security at Terminal C to Polaris lounge. When done:
3a. Take airside shuttle bus to United B gates (?). Exit secured area in Terminal B, or,
3b. Exit secured area in Terminal C and take landside shuttle from Terminal C to B.
4. Re-enter through security check into gates B60-B68.
