Just a data point. My NEXUS Membership is due to expire in October. I submitted my renewal application online 6 weeks ago. Still "pending review" waiting for approval. Haven't been able to schedule my appointment yet.

Just a heads up to start the renewal process at the earliest opportunity, because it's taking a VERY long time.

Any tips for speeding this up?

the instructions says not to use the whirl pool bridge unless you have nexus? How would i get there? I would have a rental car, and be coming from Canada. i cant drive my rental car into the US. can i walk and cross border there?

Why can't you drive a rental car into the US from the Canadian side? You can't drive a US car to Canada if you're Canadian, but it's fine in the other direction I thought, no?

You would cross at Rainbow and drive back to it.

You can walk across at Rainbow if you have to.

You can complete the scan process elsewhere (such as YYZ) after you've finished the interview. If you want to do YYZ, just show up and sign in...no appointment needed just for an iris scan.

Just a note for this group. I had to double-clear customs this week in both US and Canada coming back from Europe. Both customs areas were slammed! Nexus must have saved well over an hour that day, although, incredibly slow security to re-enter the terminal at Dulles did it's best to claw back that time.

As far as I know, you will still get your card, but you can't use the NEXUS kiosks at airports until you get your irises captured.

Unless things have changed, you can do iris scans at Niagara. When I did my interview just over 2 years back, after the interview they told me to drive across to the Cdn side of the Whirlpool Nexus bridge and do my iris scan there. Its a small one story building next to the bridge. They do not advertise this as you have to cross the border so theoretically at another location though its only about 150M away. They also gave me a one time code to use the whirlpool bridge so I could get to the other side for the iris scan. My kids did the same thing several months later too.
As I said this was 2 years back so not sure if anything has changed. When I had booked the interview, I thought I would have to go to Pearson to get the iris scan added.

Actually, there is no restriction on either. The prohibition on Canadians driving US rental cars was lifted a while ago. Unless you are stating that it has returned. In any case, the only restriction would be that of the rental company and none that I know of have it between Canada and the US (if you are returning it where you rented it ). Just don't go to Mexico.

Applying to GOES

Hi,

I'm trying to apply for NEXUS online. I currently live in Europe. But the GOES website won't let me continue unless I have Canada or USA listed. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

After reading the thread I'm seeing that conditional acceptance takes 6-8 weeks. Is there a rush fee that I could pay to get it done faster?

Thanks!

According to CBP, you can't. individuals may not be eligible if they do "not lawfully reside in either Canada or the United States for the term of their NEXUS membership".

This is the link. I used to keep a copy of the memorandum before the new rules kicked in because I was defined as a "commuter" which permitted me to drive a US plated rental car into Canada.

The new rules are here.

I just picked up my new 10-year passport today this afternoon here in YVR and walked over to the to the NEXUS office to update my passport details.

When I got home I checked in GOES and everything was updated correctly (I check because they once entered my visa expiring 2 years later than what it was issued for).

My question is .... I thought I was able to update my driver's license number online. I may be incorrect, however, I thought it was one of the details that was permitted.

Looks like I'll need to head to a NEXUS office in March to update my driver's license details.

Cheers

I was told by NEXUS office at YYZ that they no longer require drivers license information on the account. They actually removed it from my account because it was no longer needed.

Thanks for info. In March I'll ask them to remove the drivers license and therefore no need to worry about it going forward.

With GOES ... I always make sure I have the most current information, or have the information removed, so that US Immigration can never say I have expired or inaccurate information in my profile.

Many thanks
Cheers

No, there is no way to get the background check done faster.

A little bit of good luck

I applied for Nexus back in April Got my conditional acceptance last week while I was visiting in Montreal. Checked YYZ for interviews, earliest date was mid October. Out of curiosity checked YUL and there was an opening appointment for the next day, and I happened to have my passport on me because I had forgotten to take it out of my carry-on from my last trip.

Once in a while the gods to smile upon me :D:D:D

Thanks - the linked item states you can go to a specific place with a rental car but "the conveyance is not to be used in Canada for the purpose of
touring or other leisure activity." That's pretty obscure - and could cause problems. If you travel to a US city and rent a car and your trip to Canada is to more than one place, you are not allowed to bring the car. So, if you are planning to do this and arrive at the border with a US-plated rental car and state you are a resident of Canada, it would be necessary also to state that you have a specific destination to be within the regulation - no cross-border holidays permitted.
