I'm going through my first renewal. My renewal app was conditionally approved but my card has expired earlier this year (still technically valid for 2 years). I have an interview later this week and want to know what happens afterwards with the old card and if I'm able to use the Nexus lanes right away or if I have to wait for the new card to come in. Hope this helps.

They actually didn't even need my card at the interview. They will send you a new one and instruct you to destroy/shred the old one. You should be able to use the NEXUS lanes right away however, as the expired card will still show an active, un-expired profile (is what I was told by border patrol, I asked this exact question). The actual paperwork tells you that you can use it right away I believe.

Hope that helps!

Awesome that’s what I needed to know.

Thanks!

Nexus limbo

I applied for my Nexus renewal in 2019. It was Conditionally Approved in December 2019. My interview was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid. Offices in the US border towns just opened up this month and I wasn't able to go before the exact date my 730 days timed out. My account on the GOES website says my membership has expired but my Conditional approval is still valid. I have an interview date in April 2022.

I'm considering abandoning my NEXUS as the interview process at the border offices on the US side are not convenient for me. (I fly in and out of YOW and YYZ airports and their Nexus offices are closed). I'm thinking I might as well just switch to Global Entry as the interview offices are closer to home and if I'm not mistaken I have the option of Enrollment on Arrival. I believe I just select the CANCEL INTERVIEW option and I'll be able to Apply for GE?

Any thoughts/opinions on my new strategy? I use Precheck the most but do travel internationally 1-2 times a year.

Canadian citizens are not eligible for Global Entry. As I am sure that you have noticed in the Deadline to Complete Enrollment Interviews Extended due to COVID-19 [Updated - 2 Yrs] thread, where you also posted about your situation, If you have an interview scheduled on your TTP account when you reach the 730 day mark, even if that interview has not yet occurred, your application will remain valid.

Even if you are eligible for Global Entry, there is not assurance that you will receive conditional approval of your GE application and schedule an enrollment interview before your NEXUS renewal interview which is currently scheduled for April 2022.

Congrats!
When did you apply for the renewal?

Hi friends,

My Nexus card expires next month and I plan to renew. I currently live in NYC and likely won't be in Canada anytime soon.
Is there a way to renew Nexus from New York? Does renewing require an in-person interview?
If I am unable to renew Nexus, and I switch to Global Entry, does anyone know the process?

Thanks!

You may or may not require an interview to renew. When my first renewal happened in late 2015, it happened without an interview. My most recent renewal requires an interview, though my Niagara Falls appointment is still showing as on despite the COVID closures of NEXUS offices.

Have you started the renewal process yet? Very well may work in your favor. If you do need an interview, there are several offices in the US you could visit….if they’re open.

You have some options:

1) Some Nexus renewals require an in-person interview, and some are completed with no interview required - it may simply be random, but if this is your first renewal of a Nexus membership, I suspect the odds of no interview being required are higher. One option is to simply apply to renew Nexus and "hope" for no in-person interview being required for your renewal.

2) A second option is to simply apply for GE. GE interviews are widely available throughout the US, compared with Nexus interviews only taking place at locations staffed by both US CBP and Canada CBSA staff (boarders or certain Canadian airports offering US Customs services). As your Nexus membership is about to expire, be aware that once a GE application is completed and you are fully approved for GE, any Nexus membership you might still have is automatically cancelled when a GE membership transitions to approved state.

Be sure to use the TTP website to assess your options. https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov/

I have renewed twice and was approved both times without renewal interviews being required. I did the last renewal in September 2021 and had my new NEXUS card a month to the day later, with no interview needed.

I renewed early both times, within a couple weeks of being eligible to renew.

With that said, YMMV. I don't have the slightest idea of what would trigger an interview or what percentage is selected randomly. For myself, I cross to Canada regularly, so I have a consistent track record. Once I was selected randomly for secondary inspection and was squeaky clean. The "random selection", which truly was random, the primary inspection officer didn't ask me any questions at all, just stared at his computer screen, and told me I had been selected randomly for secondary and to pull up in there. That random selection took place while my first renewal was pending, just as an information point. While I don't know the trigger criteria, I can't help but think having a consistent record of border crossings cannot hurt.

The only thing you can do is apply and see what happens. In any case, under current policies, getting the application in before expiration will preserve your NEXUS privileges while the renewal is pending.

The renewal application is done online. You can do it anywhere, New York included.

Thanks, all!

I submitted my application, so we will see in the coming weeks/months if an in-person interview is required.

It did show this message, so it seems my benefits will extend by 2 years or so...

Due to a significant increase in application volume, we are extending the grace period from 18 months to 24 months for any submitted renewal application. This means you will continue to receive full benefits for 24 months while U.S. Customs and Border Protection is finalizing your renewal application.
I appreciate all your help!

I am STILL awaiting any kind of movement on my May 2021 renewal application, with an expiration date in February. I guess there's not much I can do? If I actually end up flying again soon without a renewal I guess I'll have to apply for TSA Pre. Sigh.

Thanks - I am aware of that thread, just not happy that my application is still pending review when I see others have had theirs addressed in much less time. And yes, I'm aware of the delays due to the pandemic. I also have seen the reports that precheck was automatically extended and appeared on boarding passes, so that's something.
