I agree it makes it less appealing. I asked because I couldn't remember if we had any data points of paper BP being asked to show ID. In my limited personal sample size all of my instances of having to show ID were mobile. But I guess that answers that

Mobile. But I don't think it should really make a difference.

What I was most interested in is the fact that these random checks are now hardcoded into the machines. This makes me believe it's here to stay. Before at SFO it used to be on a sheet of paper with checkboxes (every 5th box...you're it). Not sure how it's done at SJC, but I thought I saw the paper at one time too.

This is my experience as well. There are some airports where Clear has been a lifesaver, simply because it is a line-cutting service. SEA comes to mind since the TSA lines can be insane. But at SFO where I spend most of my time, it's actually been detrimental for me to use Clear. I can beat the machines at T3 F1 security or Int'l G with just using my ID and phone. I doubt I'll be renewing but you never know..

CLEAR has either been a slowdown or huge time saver with nothing in between. It really depends on your use cases. Like you said, Seattle has been a time saver as was the one time I used it at Detroit when the Precheck line was dozens deep to get to the TDC. It was one of those days where you could enroll and use CLEAR for the first time and still have it be faster than waiting in line. At SFO and SJC, I typically look over to see how the line is. If there aren't many people waiting for the ID check, I bypass CLEAR since the fingerprint scan takes a couple of tries for me most of the time.

I got the member escort thing recently in LAS. In a way I'm hoping that the hard coding is actually a good thing. I'd hope that since I had that ID check recently, CLEAR would note that in my profile and I will have a reasonably long run without having to do it again. With the random paper method, I had some bad luck and got an ID check three or four times in a row earlier this summer.

Are you burying your wallet at the very bottom of your bag?? My wallet is always in an pocket on the top outside of my bag, if I need to fish it out it takes all of, like, maybe 4 seconds? I generally want to return my wallet, glasses, watch etc to their "normal" places after security so I wouldn't ever "pack" them.

No, but if it's the difference between 100% of the time you will have to show your ID and boarding pass versus paying for a service that supposedly automates that step but yet you inconsistently need to show the boarding pass and ID, it removes much of the value the service provides. The first few times this caught me off guard, and I had already placed my wallet and phone inside my briefcase (since many Precheck lanes no longer have any doggie bowls for loose items).

It's not that it takes only a few seconds to fish my wallet out but rather the inconsistency of the CLEAR process that is frustrating. It would be the equivalent of the Precheck lane randomly having people needing to remove liquids or electronics. You pack differently in anticipation a predictable process, which turns out to be inconsistent.

Being based in DEN, CLEAR has provided me consistency. I can pretty much count on getting into my Uber at home, and it will take 40-45 minutes to get driven to the airport, go through security, get on the train, and be at my gate. I would have to add 15 minutes given how incredibly long Pre-Check lines can get. That consistency allows me to spend more quality time with my kids, or it lets me sleep in a little bit longer.

That said, my travel is practically zero now, so I will suspend my membership.

This. Unless TSA pulls my (heavily-tech-laden) bag for a second look, I'm curb-to-gate in typically 5-8 mins @SJC.

Not sure if anyone will know this one, but might as well double check - a family member won two free CLEAR memberships for a year and she asked me to give one to my dad. However, the coupon code for the free membership expires tomorrow. If my dad signs up and complete the register portion online, does he need to also go to an airport to have his biometrics portion completed by tomorrow to still get the free year? If you start registration prior to the coupon code expiring but not complete the biometrics portion until after the coupon code expires, do you still get the discount?

Probably not the best thread, bot couldn't find a better thread:

https://www.fastcompany.com/90245393...ort-or-stadium

> Clear has its origins in a company called Verified Identity Pass (V.I.P.), which was founded by journalist/author/entrepreneur Steven Brill to let its members bypass security lines using a smart card reinforced with their biometric data. In 2009, after raising $90 million and amassing some 200,000 users, the company went bankrupt, unable to recover from the reputational blow it suffered after losing a laptop containing the personal data of some 33,000 members.

> In addition to annual membership fees, Clear collects payments from some airports ($2.15 million over five years from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, for example) while offering participating transit partners a percentage of fees from members in each airport’s region.

> Membership has grown from 500,000 in 2016 to nearly 3 million today, and the company boasts a 90% customer-retention rate.

> Kevin Lupowitz was Clear’s chief information officer from December 2012 to November 2017 and worked with the Department of Homeland Security to refine Clear’s known-traveler predictive capabilities. “That algorithm itself was safety-act certified by Homeland Security,” says Lupowitz.

> Clear is also working with Delta to automate what Seidman-Becker calls the “curb to gate” experience, which includes baggage check and entry into the airline’s Sky Club lounges. In August, it launched an age-verifying device for sports venues that lets fans pay for concessions—including alcohol—by fingerprint.

> Clear is also courting the ride-hailing and auto sectors, extending its scope into a home-to-gate service: It has pending deals in the rental-car industry.

> Clear’s storage platform runs on Amazon Web Services, and executives say the company employs deep layers of protection for members’ data: The biometric captures are encrypted in storage; when they’re transferred, they’re converted into numerical form rather than saved as images, so as to thwart reverse engineering.

> Clear spokespeople emphasize that its predictive tools are completely separate from its biometrics business. Both Lupo-witz and a company spokesperson stressed that the predictive models are derived solely from publicly available data, not Clear member data. And company spokespeople affirmed that Clear does not plan to use members’ data in the future for its predictive-analytics capabilities.

I bought into Clear at MCO, where morning flights are a nightmare. When I was based in SEA, it was also useful. Add DEN, where Pre-check can be clogged up too.

Anything I can do to avoid waiting at airports is of value to me.

Promotional email received today: "New from CLEAR! Get through SLC in one tap"

FLYING DELTA OUT OF SLC?
As a SkyMiles Member, you no longer have to scan your paper or mobile Delta boarding pass at the CLEAR pods.*

Your eyes and fingertips are all you need.

Just one more way CLEAR makes your life more seamless and secure.
The fine print says: "*Members are still required to check in to their flights prior to using the CLEAR Lanes. Local airport or airline rules may require presentation of your ID and/or boarding pass from time to time."

How will this work functionally? Do you use one of the CLEAR kiosks to board? Wouldn't this slow boarding? I often end up having to scan my fingerprints 2 or 3 times to get the CLEAR kiosk to recognize me.

I'm assuming it means CLEAR will use data from DL to determine your BP info from your ID, and that this is only to get through security. i.e. boarding will still happen how it currently does.

Oh, I misread that. I thought DL was implementing something where you could use CLEAR to board in lieu of a boarding pass. Now I understand that it's able to match a boarding pass to your biometrics.
