Lovely selection of eateries, thanks for sharing. I think my last time stopping in Birmingham was 1990, it seems to have changed a lot

It is an interesting melting pot but it does have all of the usual big city problems you find pretty much anywhere. One thing for certain, if you like curries youll never run out of options.

I briefly thought of doing a Birmingham Bites again thread but in the end it made more sense to me to add to this one. Im staying in Birmingham center this week and again the next two visit so I thought Id add some more eateries to the tally.

Last night was the Ming Moon buffet on the edge of Chinatown and that gets a two word review Just Dont!

Time to move onto something far nicer

Tonight I am in the Indian Cafe Racer restaurant at the back of the wellington pub! If you were walking down the street looking randomly for a place to eat you would probably just pass on by. That would be a massive mistake! Once past the bar there is a very pleasant dining space with soft jazz playing in the background

It bills itself as ‘From the Streets’ and has a decent but not extensive menu and some different offerings from the norm, such as the papdi… more on those in a moment. The menu:

For nibbles whilst I perused the menu I had the Mix Papdi with Mix Pickles, a Mango and mustard seed and a chilli and almond pickle. The mango was outstanding, the chilli was not far behind. The papdi were just perfect, in all honesty Id have happily sat there nibbling these all night.

Having been persuaded to have the Lamb as a main I chose the chicken 65 to start. I was worried about the very hot comment in the menu but bravery (or lunacy) won out. Sometimes in Birmingham spice levels can reach the truly volcanic!

The presentation was a surprise, the chicken stood alone, no salad on the side, no dips, no frippery. It turns out it needed no such diversions. The heat was definitely there, at the end of the dish there was some brow leakage, but the spice was not overwhelming. The depth of flavour they had imbued these little pieces of chicken with was terrific, absolutely delicious starter and not overly filling

For the main course I went with the servers recommendation of the Rajastani Lamb with Pilau Rice and bread. Again delicious. The rice was delivered to the table in a lidded dish and when the lid was lifted the the aroma was mouth watering.

Total bill for the evening under 45

Pretty standard pappadoms and chutneys

And then the president platters, one with lamb, the other with lobster. These are truly outstanding, everything on the platters is absolutely packed with flavour

Main courses tonight were much more sensible than last time, just two hot dishes, chicken and lamb, and the same two standard dishes, plus some rice and bread.

Again, outstanding. The same caution as before, if you order a hot curry in Birmingham be sure you can handle the spice as the two hot dishes caused many a sweaty brow and runny nose.

Asha’s is a great restaurant for a treat, Indian fine dining, fantastic staff, excellent ambiance, exquisite cuisine, it has never let us down.
