I Can't Believe What Some Of The UA 1K's Are Saying...
Just flew from SFO to YVR in seat 1A (gave up my exit isle 11D). What a mistake. I'll keep the exit isle in E+ everytime. Should have looked at Seatguru.com first, my bad!

Give me first every time.
While agree that the distance between seats is important, the width and number per row really make a difference with a great coach class seat or a bad first class one.
A bad first class is going to be wider and there is only going to be one person next to me (window seat). I do agree with the OPs that the legroom in a bad first class seat is worse than an exit row in coach.

The worst first has a pitch of 34" and a width of 19". The best economy (if you count premium economy) was 42" pitch and 20" width on the A340-500s on Thai. Or assuming you count premium economy, Openskies PE+ which is 52" pitch and 20" width.
Not counting premium economy, jetBlue's even more legroom section has 18" width or something and 38" pitch.

The worst F must be pretty grim. But the best Y seat is the one with my fiancee in the seat next door (she doesn't fly in premium cabins as she doesn't have a job that accrues miles for redemptions) and I'd much rather be in the best Y seat than the worst F.

The worst 1st class seat. The width and non sharing of arm rests is key. Now if you had a choice of coach with an empty middle seat or 1st class, then I'd have to start taking a hard look at coach.

No fair comparing American domestic "F" (which is "regional C" anywhere else) with long haul Y on good airlines...
It should be American domestic F compared to American Domestic Y...
OR ANY F, compared to any Y....
In both cases I'll take the "F" seat thanks very much!!!

Well the question was the best coach vs the worst first class so that means the best coach vs US domestic F. I can't see what is "not fair" about that as it seems this is exactly what the OP was asking about. Making the comparison vs US domestic coach would be the same as saying the worst First vs one of the worst coach, it's not really what was intended.

Best Economy for me. Just flew United transatlantic for the first time in...maybe a decade? And let me tell you: those business class seats looked nice, and the first class seats looked like heaven on wings.
I used to infrequently fly in first (domestically) on the old employers funds, and don't recall it being anywhere near that nice! But nowdays I fly on my own dime, and there is no way spending 8 hours in one of the upper class seat is worth the cost of a new car
Either one gets you from a to b in the same time
