Can a gate agent upgrade someone because they like you or you tip them?

1. In a non-full business class what will happen if I just sit down in an open seat late in a boarding process?
2. What is the authority of FAs to upgrade you right there on the spot (this does not leave a trail in the system like it does to a GA upgrade)

1. If you don't show up on the passenger list, they'll know. Most will move you, I guess, but not always. There are threads here on FT about this sort of "self-upgrade."
2. They're not supposed to and it basically doesn't happen much AFAIK -- but there are always exceptions.
