The Nature vs. Nurture argument.

IMO initially it is your upbringing which helps determine if you are more likely to say "Please" and "Thank you".
Although eventually it is a personal choice just like any other personal actions or attitudes.

Well... I have the opposite experience.
I always thank for the service but two thirds of a time I don't even get a nod or a smile in return.

Well, as we all say thank you on FT, we can assume that anyone that doesn't say thank you is not an FTer and therefore has two strikes against them before they even get started!!

Personally, I don't say please much, however almost always say thanks. It's part of my profession where lots of orders are given so that sometimes carries over to other parts of life, but once the task is done, I'm good about saying thanks....

I suspect that many biz fliers are also in the same boat where lots of decisions are made and that practical curtness carries over since lots of the travel is related to biz....

Not that please may and thanks couldn't be added in but the cultures of some biz environments foster this....

Language specific

I not only say please and thank you, I do it in the language of the carrier. I can say such basic phrases in a couple of dozen languages and it certainly makes the person I'm talking to happy. All FA's speak English to some degree, but they generally like it when you speak their native language, at least to say please and thank you.

And to my observations, more people say please and thank you in first and biz than do in economy.

Time for a rigorous analysis on this one!

Maybe its time for FT'ers to conduct an observational study on this...
1. Enlist the FA's to cooperate, so they count the no. of times ppl say please &/ TY.
2. Get number of pax in each class
3. Send in all the numbers to the OP and request him/her to run regressions on it!

Dont forget to say please, or thank you when you see the results!!

I've done my time in the service industry (waitress and retail in high school/college) and was taught as well -- always say please and thank you. It's 'May I?' rather than 'Can I?', and certainly not 'Give me...'

I find myself saying thank you to the fast food employees. It's amazing how many of them actually smile and give good service once you do that. Courtesy begets courtesy.

For every please and thank you I give, I like to think I've helped others to do the same... let's keep the tide rolling!

Absolutely, I spent my college years waiting tables. It tends to make you extremely appreciative of anyone who provides any type of service. I know it always brightened my shift when someone thanked me for anything and I now always do so myself. I had an ex-boyfriend who used to be horrible to waitstaff. It was so bad I made a point never to go out to eat with him until he learned to behave.
