embarrassingly obvious question

Okay, so it took me a long time to get up the nerve to ask this question because it seems like it should be so obvious, and i searched but perhaps not well enough...

but I've never flown codeshare before, and next month my sister is flying DL metal with an NW flight number. The ticket was booked through AMEX.

At the airport, does she check in with Delta or Northwest?!

She checks in with DL. You always check in with the airline whose metal you are flying.

It will help if she knows the DL flight numbers of the flights she is taking. The travel agency should be able to tell her or she can look up the flight times on the DL website. That way she will be able to find the flights on the departure boards much more easily.

She looks up the flight number on the departures board and goes to the checkin desk that it tells her to go to.

And (based on my experience) if you have a flight with connections - you check in at the desk of the airline who operates flight segment one. In past years, that sometimes meant checking in again with the second airline to get the second boarding pass, but now it is becoming more common to get both boarding passes from the originating airline.

Not a dumb question at all! ^

Always check in with the airline that operates your first flight that day.

Last month, I flew on DL metal out and a combination of CO and NW back. On the outbound, since DL metal was my first flight that day, I checked in with DL. When I returned, since the first flight that day was CO metal, I checked in with CO for all flights.

It helps to know what the operating airline's flight number is. (DL #6576 may actually be CO # 149.) This way, you can check the departure boards for that flight #. And you can also check on the operating airline's web site for the status of the flight.

It is not a dumb question. Many travelers also have the same question.

Definitely check-in with the airline whose plane you are flying. Codeshares are tricky. I think they mess up a lot of travelers who end up going to the wrong counter first and then have to trek to the right one.

Good luck with that! I had an AS codeshare on AA equipment. AS TAs were not scheduled to be there for several hours and AA kiosks would not recognize me. The Platinum line helped me out. But in general I agree. Go to the equipment carrier first as they are often in different terminals. They should be able to check you in!
