Always check in with the airline that operates your first flight that day.

Last month, I flew on DL metal out and a combination of CO and NW back. On the outbound, since DL metal was my first flight that day, I checked in with DL. When I returned, since the first flight that day was CO metal, I checked in with CO for all flights.

It helps to know what the operating airline's flight number is. (DL #6576 may actually be CO # 149.) This way, you can check the departure boards for that flight #. And you can also check on the operating airline's web site for the status of the flight.

It is not a dumb question. Many travelers also have the same question.
