What purpose does it serve?
On a recent red-eye flight from LAS to EWR we didn't have the movie listed in the Inflight Magazine. As the lead, I decided to show another movie we did have.
As the customers were boarding some asked what the movie would be. I told them it would be "Mystery Men", to which they responded, "Whose in it and what is it about?", one other customer said, "Is it a family type movie?" -all movies shown on our main screen are rated with a PG-13, PG, or G. I told them I didn't know, but we would show a preview of it before showing it.
After takeoff we showed the preview and began renting out the headsets, one of the customers who had asked us about the film when boarding said, "That looks awful" (needless to say she didn't rent a headset).
After arriving in EWR 4.5 hours later at 7:00 a.m. and as the plane was emptying its travelers, the same woman came up to me and rather than saying, "Thanks or this flight stunk", she said, "That was the worst movie I've ever seen". I was stunned, she was asleep during the showing and she didn't rent a headset. What makes people say such unusual comments? Does the movie really make or break the flight?

Bluntly, I would just say this woman was an utter moron. I wouldn't give it a second thought.
But regarding the movie making/breaking flight, at least for me, no. I flew 16 segments on UA last month, and didn't pay attention to the movie once. Likely will do the same this month, where they'll be showing "Inspector Gadget" for two weeks. Oh joy.

I think the key word in your posting was.....(oh boy, Catman is going to be mad at me)....EWR.
A recent USA Today survey of flight attendants showed that the most unpleasant passengers fly in and out of EWR. Surprisingly, PBI (West Palm Beach) ranked second.

MA, c'mon. As a former NYer whose had his share of "troubles" adjusting to New Jersey, I'd just like to say/reiterate that, as you know, you can find "morons" anywhere, just as you can find nice folks everywhere! And how to you know the pax was not from Seattle, my favorite US city after NYC?!

I agree with Axey, the woman was probably some irritable woman who would grumble or complain about anything which wasn't exactly what she preferred.
For me, the choice of movie wouldn't "make or break" a flight, but sometimes it sure does make a flight a bit more pleasant. I generally don't watch a lot of movies, but if a movie is being shown on a flight which I wanted to see, then I actually look forward to the movie.
What is terrible is when a movie which you would really like to see is being shown on the return leg of your flight, but your return flight is in the next month and so the movies will have changed by then

Guys, guys....I don't have any beef with folks in NJ...heck, I spent the first 18 years of my life in South Jersey. I'm just passing along the news I read.
Besides, if it wasn't for NJ, where would I go for the best pizza on the planet!

Don't take it personally, CO757. I think a movie can MAKE a flight (like when I saw Titanic on the UA DC-10 nonstop from IAD-SEA before they turned it into an A320.
But it's hard to see how a movie could BREAK a flight. I saw Big Daddy twice...

Do you remember what USA Today you read that statistic? Quite honestly, I like flying with the EWR crowd, there are those who are a challenge, like the woman in this post; but a lot are just great. They appreicate attentive service, a smile and common courtesy. They do not like rudeness, being lied to or sourpuss faces.
DOC
You are absolutely correct, rude behavior happens in every corner of the world. It knows no social structure, ethnic group or age group. I remember a flight years ago when I made the landing annoucement and said, "Welcome to Minot, South Dakota." and the entire plane said (in very loud agitated voices)"It's in North Dakota!". Needless to say, that was the longest 737 deplaning process in the world (I couldn't wait for them to get off)!

MileageAddict--what's your favorite around here Dave? King of Pizza? That's tops for me, although a few others (franco's in Westmont, Lamberti's, Vitarellis and some others are awfully close). Villa Rosa and Frank's in town are pretty good too. What was your favorite when you were back in Haddonfield?

CO757,
A few notes. First of all, the South Dakota/North Dakota thing really hits a nerve to people who live there. It's like when people insist upon calling you by your sibling's name. Sorta takes away from one's sense of identity, and adds to the "sibling rivalry." Incidentally, the same thing happens between UCLA and USC, or between Seattle and Portland.
The other thing (really minor) is, to turn bold on and off, it's just "b" not "bold."

Djlawman,
Vito's in Cherry Hill...I forget the name of the busy street but it is very close to I-295 and the Melitta Coffee plant. Also, Mimmo's on King's Hwy in Haddon Heights is good.
It's a lot tougher finding good pizza in the Seattle area but I've managed to find a few.
Yikes, This topic needs to move over to OMNI!!!

AHEM! The worst flyers are out of EWR???
First off: I am NOT mad at you Mileage Addict! I want to use my claws against the idiot who did that survey!
Well, they have NOT met me!!! I think I am nice and courteous and friendly (for someone from NUDE JERZEEE!) They should just talk to any of you all Flyertalkers.
I do not believe in surveys (surveys are based on those who answer the phone or fill out a form on the internet, are they really a fair representative of the population.)
And surveys are generalizations. Remember there are six billion people in the world. We are all individuals.
Actually, I consider myself not from new Jersey or the U-S but a person of the universe. Open to all views, friend to all and cats.
I am NOT mad at you MIleage Addict. I am mad at the idiot who did that survey.
Remember: I am totally different from DOC or DJlawman or NJDavid (HECK! I'm the odd duck among all you all and proud of it!)
But on a happier topic... there is great pizza in New Jersey???? I assumed the only good place with the Pizzeria UNO Brew Pub on U-S route one in Edison (about a mile from the Menlo Park.)
Well the pizza's good. But the BEER!! the Hop heads are really in Jersey because they enjoy the beer from the finest water on earth!
Now on this woman... was she in COACH? maybe she is an infrequent flyer who thinks the whole plane is bow to her royal highness. That is why I fly my airline of choice, United.
QUiet Lion: you liked Big Daddy? I think I gave me a mediocre review but personally upon being forced to sit through it at a friend's house... TWO HAIRBALLS!!!
Make that 3. Yaz just added one.

I believe the survey was done by the big flight attendants union [AFA] of a bunch of flight attendants. I read the article in USAToday, but as you know, if it's in USAToday it's really just a snippet.
There are rude people everyone, but without fail the place I've been with the worst crowding for 'pre-boarding' is NY's LaGuardia. Sure, a lot of those people are elite but plenty just think way too much of themself
Haven't been through Newark in a year so dunno about it.

QL - Interesting to think that if the Titanic was a plane you would not likely have ever seen the movie inflight! Recall the "Qantas never crashes" scene blackout from Dog Day Afternoon (unless you're too young)!
BTW- Johns pizza is worth a trip to Manhattan for! Darn, I'm getin' hungry! And Tottonos (now also in Manhattan) and Grimaldi's in Brooklyn aint too bad either! Mmmmmm!
