What Does Dressing "Appropriately" On A Plane Mean?

Refinery 29 What Does Dressing "Appropriately" On A Plane Mean?

"Dress codes aren't going to go away, but when they are defined by loose language like "offensive," on-the-spot, arbitrary decisions seem to always disproportionately target women and their bodies. Why are airlines so comfortable policing women's bodies and dress? Probably because it happens every day, everywhere."

I'm not sure but I wish every plane had a sign posted "No shoes, no shirt, no service."
(I don't mean people with socks, just bare, ugly grimy feet.)

Inappropriate attire seems to include bare feet (at the time of boarding), bare chests (for both men and women) and t-shirts with offensive pictures or words. Beyond that it seems to be anyone's guess.

Amen. And flip flops are not shoes...keep them at the pool or beach.

Women kicked off because they wear "revealing" clothes, but dudes with enough hair on their back to stuff a mattress and grimy feet can wear a basketball outfit and flip flops without so much as a grumble from FA's.
Its almost as if they resent the aesthetically pleasant because they feel threatened and overlook the awful because it makes them feel like they look good...compared to that.

Can't say I agree with this. They are footwear.

Don't wear flip flops but I bet you don't have a problem with any women's footwear that shows off most of the foot...

Goes both ways,

You would lose that bet I wasn't just talking about men's flip flops. I hate having to look at other people's feet in public (male or female, grimy or clean, manicured or callused, hairy or not), especially when I'm eating (whether it's on a plane or in a restaurant). However, flip flops are particularly offensive since they make that disgusting sweaty suction sound when people walk and are more prone to showing off the dirty bottom of people's feet than women's open-toe shoes or strappy sandals.

If you want my real opinion, I suggest a moderator moves this to OMNI.

To each his own.

I don't wear shoes in the house, love flip-flops, and do not understand people's obsession with flip-flops or sandals or open-toed footwear. Do you folks never go to swimming pools, beaches, gym locker rooms or yoga classes?

However...I don't fancy looking up into the hairy armpit of someone in a wife-beater leaning over me to get at his bag in the overhead. Eeewww. Or keeping his arm on the edge of the bin and nudging closer to me while he lets another pax pass by.....double eeew.

For me inappropriate is short shorts or short skirts, singlets (I especially don't want to be next to someone smelling their hairy pits) and offensive words/pics on t-shirts. I have no problems with thongs/flip flops.

Love wearing flip flops or glittery leather sandals that are shaped like flip flops.

I usually start my trip in my fancy sandals then as the trip goes on I don't care and just wear Havaianas flip flops that are easy to get on and off. There are plenty of other flips flop wearers with me in first class.

Individuals can all have different opinions about what attire is appropriate for a situation. The question about what the enforceable standards ought to be is a) fraught and b) hardly unique to commercial aviation; it's also an issue with workplaces, schools, etc.

I'm not thrilled to see dirty toenails, but then, I'm not thrilled to see a seatmate with dirty fingernails, either.

I've never understood why some people assume people with flip-flops or sandals have stinky feet. It's possible - depending on what they're made of and where they've been, even flip-flops can pick up a nasty pong, but IME, that nastiest smells I've ever encountered have been when someone with closed shoes took them off and allowed the shoes and their feet to 'breathe' (while gagging everyone else in range).
