I usually start my trip in my fancy sandals then as the trip goes on I don't care and just wear Havaianas flip flops that are easy to get on and off. There are plenty of other flips flop wearers with me in first class.
I'm not thrilled to see dirty toenails, but then, I'm not thrilled to see a seatmate with dirty fingernails, either.
I've never understood why some people assume people with flip-flops or sandals have stinky feet. It's possible - depending on what they're made of and where they've been, even flip-flops can pick up a nasty pong, but IME, that nastiest smells I've ever encountered have been when someone with closed shoes took them off and allowed the shoes and their feet to 'breathe' (while gagging everyone else in range).
