I always wonder what would happen to the flip flop folks in the event of an emergency...If the plane is on fire or if there are sharp pieces of metal (or whatever), I certainly would not want to be maneuvering through that mess in flip flops. It is just not a very smart idea, IMO.

I always wonder what they do when their inbound flight is delayed and now there's 20 minutes to catch the last connecting flight.

Just to check, are you counting flip-flops separately from sandals? I can guarantee you my sandals are more robust than most shoes aboard most aircraft. (I'll keep in mind to make my feet extra grimy in future though.)

There's a whole lot of footwear that isn't going to be particularly protective during a bad evacuation.

That said, anyone who removes footwear during a flight will be in an even worse situation, I think. Better to have flip-flops to slide your feet into than to be trying to get your feet into a regular pair of lace-up shoes or tight ladies' shoes while you're seat-belted in - or while everyone is trying to evacuate.

I have sprinted in flip-flops and even abandoned the flip-flops to sprint barefoot when I got a 'flat'.

It was much easier than trying to spring in a pair of Birkenstocks. It was much much easier than trying to sprint in a pair of heels.

YMMV.
