43- (1991, YMX-PHL-XXX-SAN, first leg is LH D10; still need a twin-jet and a UA D8S)
let’s start dissecting this, on the basis of what we’ve already ruled out:
  • UA D8S — out of PHL would have gone to ORD, DEN, LAX, or SFO; into SAN the most likely choice is DEN
  • other airlines: AA, AS, HP, US, CO, DL, NW, TW
  • twin-engine jets: 733, 734, 735, 737, 757, 767, 763, D9S, M80, AB3
of the myriad of possible combinations/permutations, I have to think the most viable is PHL-DEN-SAN, UA D8S / CO AB3

Way to break it down, J I should note that the myriad of possible combinations/permutations have to match up time and city-wise. That is to say that DEN-SAN works only if there's a twin engine jet that times well with the inbound UA DC-8-71 and is not operated by United. In this case, United's D8S into Denver is correct as is Continental into San Diego. However, we're looking for a different twin engine jet - one known for its jack screw.

Your trip will involve one non-North American airline so you’ll be departing from Montreal’s Mirabel International Airport. Thankfully however, you’ll not have to route through New York City. Identify each of the three airlines and their respective aircraft as well as the route flown.

All questions are based solely upon scheduled flights found in published OAGs or airline timetables. Please be variant specific with Boeing 727/737/757 and Douglas DC-8/DC-9 family of jetliners.

26. (2001) [/b]You’ll be traveling from your home outside Abbotsford, BC to Toluca, Mexico. The reason: To study high altitude hydroponic gardening with some local enthusiasts that you read about in a recent edition of Mother Jones magazine. Two nonstop flights will be involved - neither of them on Canadian or Mexican airlines. Once you’ve determined the closest airports requisite to your home and destination as well as the two airlines involved, you’ll also need to identify the connection point and the two different aircraft types. Andale pues!

28. (1994) After five days of frolicking on the idyllic beaches of Antigua, it’s time to relocate to the desert sands of Death Valley National Park. You’ve found a great connection to Las Vegas involving two nonstop flights, both of them utilizing the same type of equipment with a convenient hour and a half connection time which just meets the minimum connection time standard at your connection point. Identify the two airlines, the connection airport and the aircraft type.

29. (2001) As the recently elected representative of Florida's 8th Congressional District, you’ll be traveling often between Washington DC and Melbourne, Florida. You expected that you’d be making a lot of connections through Atlanta’s Hartsfield International, so you are pleasantly surprised to discover that there’s a single daily nonstop flight each afternoon out of Washington’s convenient National Airport. Identify the airline and aircraft type operating on this route.

30. (1993) There are no casinos nor any other type of legalized gambling in the state of Hawaii, so if you want to hone your considerable skills in the game of Baccarat, you’ll have to fly to the mainland. Vegas and Reno are all well and good but this time you’ve decided to try you luck down in Laughlin, Nevada. The decision is made that much easier upon discovering that Laughlin’s airport - located just across the Colorado River in Bullhead City, AZ - is accessible each day from Honolulu via a single connection involving two nonstop flights on two different airlines, each operating a different aircraft type. Identify the two airlines, the connection airport and the two aircraft types.

31. (1989) It’s a beautiful autumn morning as you alight from your taxi and head into the terminal at St. Croix’s Alexander Hamilton International Airport. Ahead lies a full day of flying - all aboard the same airline - all the way through to Cleveland, Ohio. All three flights will be nonstop, utilizing three different aircraft types. Please identify the airlines, aircraft and routing.

32. (1972) By 1972, scheduled flights aboard de Havilland’s Comet were becoming increasingly difficult to come by. So it is that you can barely contain your excitement at having just booked First Class seats aboard a pair of Comet 4s between Nairobi and London (LHR). Your first flight will be a mid-morning one-stop departure to the connection point where, after a one hour layover, you’ll continue on to London with the same airline aboard another one-stop flight to London. Identify the airline and the route, please.
A N S W E R E D

33. (1992) Plane spotters parked out along NW 72nd Ave off Millam Dairy Road are in for a treat this winter with four airlines operating scheduled flights into Miami with DC-8s. Two airlines operate standard 8s (srs 10-50) while the other two operate the 60 series. Can you identify which airlines we’re referencing here?

34. (1991) From the sunny beaches of Puerto Plata to the snowy slopes of Colorado’s Rockies, yours is a life of adventure. This extends to your air travels as well, and tomorrow’s journey will be a good example. You’ll be flying from Puerto Plata to Denver aboard three different airlines, each operating a different aircraft type (not variant) with each of the aircraft having been built by the same manufacturer.

36. (2001) You need to fly from Milwaukee to San Juan next week and you’ve come up with a great itinerary involving two nonstop flights on two different airlines, both of which will be operating the same type of aircraft. There is one little hitch however - you will need to transfer from one airport to another at the connection point. No problem! You’ll have almost four hours and it just so happens that a friend who lives in the area has volunteered to provide the transfer if you’ll provide lunch. Right on! Identify all the usual stuff please keeping in mind that Northwest is not one of the airlines involved.

37. (1995) it’s been a great week of sun and snow on the slopes of Vail Mountain, but now you’re ready for a bit of sun and sand on the beautiful beach at Hanauma Bay. You were originally scheduled to fly through Denver but a big storm along the Front Range has shut down DIA. Thankfully it’s still possible to fly all the way through from Vail to Honolulu without changing airlines. There’ll be two nonstop flights involved as well as a change of aircraft types at the connection point. Identify all the usual stuff, please.
It's not AA via DFW but a 757 is involved

38. (1994) You are in Allentown, PA enjoying dinner with your wife when you receive a call from the head office asking if you can be in Ft. Worth, TX for a consultation with the Southwest Regional Office tomorrow afternoon. Hmm… Getting from ABE to DFW is gonna require at least one connection, so you are pleased to discover that there’s a two-stop direct flight departing ABE tomorrow morning. Right on! You book one seat - in First Class please - and return to the dinner table just in time to enjoy your wife’s delicious Crème Brûlée. Identify the airline, the two enroute stops and the aircraft type please.
It's not DL or an MD80

39. (2001) Ay yi yi! What a great week you had in Puerto Vallarta! Additionally, you can hardly wait to sample the two bottles of boutique tequila you’ll be bringing back to Boston with you. As to your travel plans, they involve two airlines - each of them operating nonstop flights via a single connection point. Each flight is over 1000 miles long. Lunch and dinner will be served along the way and you’ll be able to fly First Class on the second leg. Identify the routing, the two airlines and the two aircraft types (both of them powered by the ubiquitous JT8D engine) to be flown.

41. (1972) You need to fly from East Berlin (German Democratic Republic) to Beirut but the only nonstop flight is with Interflug operating a Russian built IL-62. There are no other nonstop or direct flights. You’ve never felt comfortable flying aboard Russian jets but of course there are not a lot of airlines flying into East Berlin that don’t operate Russian built equipment. KLM comes in with a DC-9 but only once a week and not the day you want. Tarom comes in with a BAC-111 but its flights don’t connect without an overnight. JAT comes in with a DC-9 from Zagreb but there’s no direct way to Beirut from there. Hmm… what’s this? An online connection featuring two nonstop flights, both of them utilizing the same type of western built equipment. The layover is just 1:50 and there’s even First Class available on both legs. Book it, Comrade! So what’re we looking at here? Give me all the particulars, please.

45. (2001) Enough of this overbearing humidity! It’s time to dock the catamaran in Castries and relocate to the nice dry heat over on Lake Havasu in Arizona. Though you were expecting the transition to be fairly time consuming, you’ve found one airline that can get you from St. Lucia to Phoenix via a single connection involving two nonstop flights, both utilizing the same equipment type. Whhaaaat?! Book it, Danno! Airline, connection airport and aircraft type please.

46. (1995) What is the last city listed in the 1995 North American OAG that receives jet service? Identify the two airlines that serve it.
It's not Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

47. (1994) You need to get from Fairbanks, AK to Sacramento, CA on short notice. The normal thru fares are exorbitantly high with only a few hours advance notice, but your travel agent has managed to cobble together a surprisingly affordable itinerary involving three nonstop flights operated by three different airlines. Each airline operates an all-economy class configured fleet. Please identify the three airlines, the routing and - if you like - the aircraft types to be flown.

48. (1989) It’s not every day that business requires you to travel from New York City to Mexico, especially a place as seemingly obscure as Hermosillo. Still, with a population approaching 400,000 it’s not exactly a backwater. Indeed, it is the economic hub of an area covering hundreds of square miles. Now then, how to get there? Your travel agent has come up with a pretty decent deal involving a two stop direct flight out of LaGuardia to the connection airport whereupon, following an hour and forty minute layover you’ll fly nonstop to Hermosillo. Two airlines will be involved, both of which will be operating identical equipment, just painted in different colors. Please identify blah, blah, blah… You know what we want…
A N S W E R E D

49. (1972) You are in Curacao and need to fly over to Nassau. For reasons best not discussed here, you’d prefer not to transit through Miami or anywhere else in the U.S. Thankfully you’ve come up with an excellent itinerary involving two nonstop flights on two different airlines, each operating a different type of jet equipment. You’ll have just over an hour layover at the connection point. Name the two airlines, the connection point and the two aircraft types.
It's not KLM or JM via MBJ

50. (2001) The annual Conference of North American Meteorologists is being held this year in Dallas, Texas. As the chief meteorologist at Prince George’s CKPG television station, this conference offers a great opportunity to keep up with the latest advancements in the field as well as fly aboard a couple of aircraft types you’ve not yet flown before. You’ve pieced together an exciting itinerary involving three airlines operating three nonstop flights, each of them operated with equipment built outside of the United States. Identify the route, the three airlines and the three aircraft types.

Just up the road from me a piece sits Wilkes-Barre/Scranton which seems to fit the bill with jet flights on DL and US.

I'll offer Sudan Airways, operating Nairobi-Addis Ababa-Khartoum-Rome-London. They only had a couple of Comets so presumably the same aircraft working through.

Another Comet user looked after in their later years by Dan-Air, who took the aircraft when Sudan were finished with them. One ex-Sudan Comet certainly carried on with Dan-Air holiday flights into the 1980s.

48- to the best of my recollection, HMO had very limited trans-border service, so while we might be looking at a connection between 727-200s in Mexico City/MEX (American to Mexicana, with the AA jet hitting the hubs at Nashville/BNA or Raleigh-Durham/RDU and Dallas/DFW), in the context of the Quiz I think Aeromexico with a DC-9-30 from Phoenix/PHX is more likely ... a two-stop D9S LGA-PHX would have probably been Northwest, via Detroit/DTW and Memphis/MEM

50- upper British Columbia saw a bunch of Canadian Partner F.28 service to Vancouver/YVR, and Northwest very likely ran an A320 from there to the Minneapolis/MSP hub; MSP-DFW was probably a Fokker 100 in bAAre-metal-finish

37. Looks like we shall have to backtrack here a bit, boys. Although my guess seems a bit too obvious: American operating a B757-200 from Vail/Eagle County Airport to Dallas/Fort Worth and then connecting to an AA DC-10 for the nonstop to Honolulu. And BTW, I have very fond memories of Hanauma Bay back when I lived in Honolulu.

38. Perhaps Delta is ready when I am concerning this journey. So let's go with DL operating an MD-80 via stops in Atlanta and New Orleans.

Way to get the ball rolling on this one, Blue - W sits pretty far down the alphabet but there's still X, Y and Z. I can think of a couple just off the top of me head amidst those three.

Please, continue on!!

Good call, Mr. M - Sudan Airways it is

Sudan Airways SD 325 Nairobi (NBO) 1100a-1240p Addis Adaba (ADD) 125p-300p Khartoum (KRT) Comet 4 Sa only
Sudan Airways SD 118 Khartoum (KRT) 400p-725p Rome (FCO) 825p-955p London (LHR) Comet 4 Sa only

I've always wondered about airlines such as Sudan Airways, Air Mauritius, Nigerian Airways et al that offered a First Class cabin. Did they offer a First Class product on par with any of the European airlines or was it just a larger, more comfortable seat with a marginally better meal than back in Economy? On many routes these airlines competed with BOAC and other established European carriers and I should imagine it'd be a hard sell if their First Class product was markedly inferior. Case in point - I remember flying Tabua Class (equivalent of Business Class) on an Air Pacific 747 between Nadi and Auckland. From check-in through to disembarkation, the service was a joke, akin to children playing at working for an airline. The cabin crew smiled a lot but were otherwise of little to no use.

Another Comet user looked after in their later years by Dan-Air, who took the aircraft when Sudan were finished with them. One ex-Sudan Comet certainly carried on with Dan-Air holiday flights into the 1980s.

Besides Dan Air, did any other airline operate the Comet past say... 1975?

Sorry for the slow responses - it's 42 below zero here in Alaska's Interior and these pages are taking a long time to load - as are submitted replies. Thanks for your patience!

You're on the right track here, J. Northwest and its DC-9-30 are correct and the flight did pass through MEM and PHX (but not DTW). However, PHX was not the gateway city. And yes, the connection was made to AeroMexico. I think we're talking tap-in time, verdad?

You're correct about this journey commencing with an F.28 to YVR but CP is not listed as the airline of record. Beyond that however, your supposition veers wildly off course and ends up in the weeds. No Fokker 100s or Airbus A320s were involved in this itinerary. Nor was MSP, NW or AA.

Please carry on, eh?

50.

CP was history by 2001 IIRC so the YXS-YVR route was probably a Air Canada Jazz on a former Canadian Regional F28..

From there, how about Phillippine Airlines YVR-LAS on a A340-300, continuing on a America West A319 to DFW?
