16- TW D9S operating ATL-STL-XXX-FSD:

well, we have so far eliminated Sioux City (SUX, post #15997), Omaha (OMA, post #16010), and Lincoln (LNK, post #16020)

literally, “down the road a piece from LNK” would most likely be Kansas City (MCI)

Has anyone seen the Old Girl on the ground at IAH ? I presume the crew are having a well-earned rest in a hotel after that marathon.

The question in my mind is, what were they carrying that made it seem like a good idea?

Well, it's been awhile since I've been to IAH (and my last connection via UA there was no fun at all due to a huge delay....but we won't dwell on that).....

However, over the years, I've seen Antonov 12 aircraft parked on the ramp just across from the FedEx facility just west of JFK Blvd. at IAH on several occasions

So if anyone is in the area and has time to take a look.....

When it did recently, you were pleased to discover a two-stop direct flight from Atlanta that would put you into Sioux Falls early in the afternoon. You quickly book it and make a note to pack a sandwich since no meals will be offered enroute. Name the airline, the two intermediate stops and the aircraft type you’ll be flying.

Per jrl767:
TW D9S operating ATL-STL-XXX-FSD: Well, we have so far eliminated Sioux City (SUX, post #15997 ), Omaha (OMA, post #16010 ), and Lincoln (LNK, post #16020 )
Literally, “down the road a piece from LNK” would most likely be Kansas City (MCI)

Better check your road maps, J - MCI is down at least a couple of roads from LNK, such as I-80 to I-29 with a few side roads thrown in for good measure.

Per jlemon: And if the missing stop isn't MCI, I'll then go with the TWA D9S flight in question operating Atlanta - St. Louis - Des Moines - Sioux City.

Correct! Des Moines is the missing stop. It's located just 189 miles down Interstate 80 from Lincoln. Here's the schedule:

TWA TW 503 Atlanta (ATL) 927a-1003a St. Louis (STL) 1110a-1215p Des Moines (DSM) 1235p-121p Sioux Falls (FSD) DC-9-30 Daily

5. (1958) It’s autumn of 1958 and you’re excited to be making your first trans-continental trip. Your flight will depart from Hartford’s Bradley International Airport and make three stops enroute to your destination at Oakland International Airport, conveniently located just four miles from your uncle’s house in San Leandro. Identify the airline, the aircraft and the three enroute stops you’ll make.
See Post 15927

11. (1988) You’ve just received an invitation from an old business partner to join him and a couple of associates for a weekend of golf and networking at Las Vegas’ Showboat Country Club. Well… why the heck not?! Especially since a hurricane is bearing down on the Florida Keys and the weather in Miami projects to be less than desirable over the next few days. A quick check of the schedules indicates that the MIA-LAS market is served via a single direct one stop flight that’ll get you into Las Vegas in the early afternoon, just in time for a nine hole warm up round followed by a round of cocktails and dinner. You quickly book a First Class seat and call your partner back to relay your arrival time. Please identify the airline, aircraft and the enroute stop.

12. (1961) You’ve been wanting to take your wife on vacation to Portugal for years. Now that a new two-stop direct jet flight has become available between Miami and Lisbon, what’s stopping you? Why, nothing, Senhor! Please identify the airline, the two enroute stops and of course the aircraft type to be flown.
HINT:The jet had 4 engines

22. (1982) In 1982, only one airline operated a turboprop nonstop from the U.S. mainland to the far reaches (over 1000 miles from the U.S. mainland) of the West Indies. The flight operated twice weekly and continued on to another island where it overnighted before returning to the U.S. the next day. Identify the airline, the U.S. gateway airport, the two destination airports and the aircraft type.

25. (1988) What’s this? You’re driving to work through the Toronto suburbs when you spy a billboard touting Toronto’s only direct (one-stop) service to the Virgin Islands – specifically St. Thomas. Hmm... You quickly call your wife. What do you think, honey? Wanna go to the Virgin Islands next month? Right on! You quickly book a pair of seats while your wife works on the hotels. Please identify the airline, aircraft and the enroute stop, eh!

30. (1988) You need to fly from Nassau in the Bahamas up to Hartford, Connecticut. To your surprise, the market is served by a single once daily direct flight that makes just one stop along the way. You quickly book yourself a First Class seat. Which airline will you be flying with? And while we’re at it, what’s the enroute stop and what type of aircraft will you be flying upon?

And speaking of the Antonov An-12 at IAH, here's a blast from the past.....

BTW, I got to fly on board the colorful CO B777-200ER in the photo in the front cabin from IAH to CDG. It was my first trip to Paris......

1,000 miles to two islands seems to indicate the Dutch ABC islands - Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, and if the flight was just twice weekly and came back to Miami the next day it seems to indicate it was operated by one of the Miami charter operators on someone else's behalf. Lets go for ALM who were using an Electra, leased from someone like Fleming International.

You're right about the Electra but the destination islands were not Aruba, Bonaire or Curacao. Nor was the airline ALM. Head up northeast a ways...

This is a tough question. It could be many airlines.

Eastern Airlines, Boeing 757-200, ATL

Way to belly up to the bar for the first shot at this question, Toshbaf! ^^ You've even answered two thirds of it correctly! The airline was indeed Eastern and the aircraft was a 757-200. However, the single enroute stop was not at Atlanta. Im sure you'll knock this one back on your next shot. ^

Logic may be that the stop was in Houston / IAH. However, I know for a fact that the Houston hub was dismantled by 1988. It was in place at least around 1983 or before, 1984, 1985 or so. Then Eastern's Midnight Express took over a gutted hub, flying Airbus A300-B4 in the middle of the night, offering low fares, no check in allowance, no snacks (which was the norm in the 1980's), and the belly used for cargo. So not IAH.

This is a gamble, but it's Las Vegas! Eastern had limited LAS-LAX service. So...

MIA - LAX - LAS, Eastern Airlines, Boeing 757-200

Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner!! Great call, Mr. T! Here's the schedule:
