Didn't realize this could be a problem.
I simply ask for the can of beverage.
There is no reason for them to not want me to have it.
(Maybe they were worried that you would do something unkind with it - like throwing it at someone?)

Like others have said, when asked what I want I'll say "May I have a can of XYZ..."
Usually I'll get a dirty look and the can will be handed to me very snarkily, but I'll get it...

Unless you are sitting in the first row you can tell if they are giving out cans or not. If they are, then just ask for what you want. If they are not then ask for the full can.
Can I get you a drink?
Thanks, a diet coke please, any chance I can get the full can?

The only time I was turned down when asking for the entire can was on a flight from MCO to EWR with DL. It was years ago. "We only serve glasses of soft drinks on this flight." I had already asked for "no ice" and when she gave me the cup of soda with ice, I just took it and wasn't going to say anything. But my Dad who was flying with me was insistent so he mentioned to the FA that I asked for no ice. She ended up throwing the cup away with the soda with ice and gave me another glass without ice. Funny, because she ended up using about a full can on me anyway!

Wirelessly posted (beckoa\'s PWP wonderous poster: BlackBerry9000/4.6.0.304 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)
Back before FT when I flew Y (well I still sometimes end up there
) I would actually ask for both a can of two different beverages. Most of the time they obliged

This never fails for me when they ask me what I'd like to drink:
"If I promise to drink it all, can I have a whole can of xxx?"
I always get the full can and most times a pleasant smile or sassy comment back.

Ask
The only time I've ever had a problem getting the can was on a short flight in an EMB 120, where they had only 1 can of the beverage I wanted. I waited until beverage service was done, and took a can of something else.
I always ask for "[beverage] with no cup please." I'm a klutz, and I tend to spill things, the can works out much better for me and my shirt.
If they were to have a problem with it, I won't have a problem making a phone call to customer service to let them know that the air waitress had a problem ponying up a $0.25 can of soda for a frequent traveler.
It's never come to that though.

On EWR to MIA on CO last week they were not giving out cans. They would pour you as many glasses as you wanted so you had a full cans worth, but they would not leave the can, they said they did not want to come through and pick up just cans, it was easier to recycle this way.

Coke Zero has been my weapon of choice to get the whole can. And if I don't get the can, no worries. I'm not shy about heading to the galley or hitting the call button if I get thirsty later on in the flight.
