Like other posters have said...ask?

But seriously, has anybody been refused?

"I am sorry sir, but this is our last can of Coke and I need to serve five more passengers."

Been refused? No. Been made to feel like I've asked the FA for her first-born child? Yes.

"What do you mean you ran out of soda pop?"

"Ask the man in 16C, why don't you - he had a whole can!"

Though she didn't point, all eyes swivel toward you in unison ...

Only airline I've ever encountered a problem with getting a whole can was on Southwest...more than once. Last time it happened was last year. I was very clear and polite with my request, however the FA still brought a cup, so I said "nope, try again" and asked him to bring back a full can. He did so with a really grumpy attitude, but whatever.

Never had an issue on other carriers...

I always ask for a can ("May I have a can of OJ please?")
Works about 90% of the time.
Don't know why but the rest 10% just ignore my request and fill me a cup. This is always the case, they just ignore me.
What follows is a trip to the galley and saying I'm really dehydrated (most people tend to be while up in the air) and usualy end up two cans in my hands.
Pulling the dehydration card works every time. (I drink about 3-4 glasses of water with every meal, 2+ gallons a day)

"Nope, try again." <-- not exactly a prime example of clarity nor politeness.

Maybe I should clarify my previous statement. On the initial request for the can I was very clear and polite, however, when that first request was ignored and he brought me the cup-all politeness went out the window.

Try NOT getting the can on United...

Me: 'Can I just have a glass, no can?'
FA: 'Just take the can, maybe you'll want it'
Me: 'But I know I won't drink it all, I only want a bit'
FA: 'It's easier this way'
20 minutes later I drop a nearly full can into her trash bag (warning her first)....hey, I tried to avoid this.

UA seems very OK with giving cans, I never had to ask for the full can.

Only AC Jazz seems to have a problem with it, asked politely but only got a cup.

LOL i don't remember with which airline but they didn't have cans. They just had the 1.5L bottle of any drink. I got through by asking something particular like ginger ale or coke light!

If you are able to get the can, consider keeping it.

Sports stadiums typically ban cans from being brought into stadiums, banning items that may be a projectile such as a pop can ... that can be used as a missile."
