A week after 9/11. 3 people on my flight besides the working crew.

For me, a flight with the seat next to me empty would be the emptiest flight.

I was flying ROA-ATL on a CRJ200. It holds 50 people and including me, there was only 11 passengers on board.

We could have each had a row, and still have space left.

My questions:
1) Do airlines not lose money on flights this empty?
2) What's the lowest number of passengers you've flown with? I understand that plane size varies a lot. My flight was 22% full, can you go lower?

Do you know how many flew the ATL-ROA sector ?

They may have lost money on the flight, but the plane and crew was probably needed for the next segment. The only time they can cancel easily is planes shuttling between two airports, if they can cancel both thips

I'd guess 30 people...

Don't know about the back of the plane but my wife and I were the only 2 F pax on LH SFO-MUC last year. Was a pretty sweet 10 hour charter.

Just remembered... about 15 years ago I was the only pax on a BE1900 from CIU-DTW. Was memorable as I recall flames shooting from the left engine on take-off. I rushed up to the cockpit to tell the crew who calmly told me "ah don't worry, happens all the time in this weather"

The emptiest flight for me was on JL 7 from JFK-NRT on a 744 back in March of 2009. This flight was severely empty (less than 50%). The later flight JL 6 to NRT (B777-300ER) on the same day was oversold according to the ground staff.

January 1, 2000, KLM, AMS-LAX less than 30 passengers on a 747. That was Y2K. Everyone was afraid to fly.

LH FRA-IAH on Thanksgiving Day a few years ago. An entire row of four to myself.

Some years ago I flew SYD-CBR on a QF 737... around lunchtime on a weekday.

I had just got back from LAX and checked in 2 bags... the other THREE pax were all "hand luggage only" and must have all had lounge access as I was on my OWN in the departure gate until boarding started...

...worse to come however... waiting at the carousel in CBR... by myself...

Emptiest flight?

10 days or so after 9/11. An overnight to London. I don't know what the plane was, but was a 2-5-2 seating configuration. There was less than 20 on board, including FAs.

Flight back 21 days later, however was
completely full

About 10 years ago, I was the only passenger on a regional jet. The FA told me I had to sit in the back row for weight distribution purposes. I sat in each seat in that row at some point, just because I could. :) The FA was very nice; she gave me all the snacks and beverages I wanted.

When the plane landed and the cargo hold was opened, I heard someone yell, "Holy cow!" because there was no luggage to unload.

March 31, 2011. I flew from Helsinki to Tokyo (after the tsunami, Fukushima etc.) I counted some 20 people on board AY73 (A340). There were two of us in the C cabin. Hope at least the cargo was full.

Sometime in Winter 1997/1998 there were three of us on the plane from CAK-YNG.

Back in the late 80s or early 90s, I was on an L1011 from CUN-DTW with 7 other passengers. There were more flight crew than passengers on that flight.
