You can sometimes see flights, fares and detailed fare rules that may not be reflected on an airline's website. Please read the thread for some tips and tricks, screen shots, etc.
A related thread, ITA-Matrix-PowerTools - Userscript for Orbitz/DL/UA/AA/BA/CZ/IB/LA/LH/LX/TK, discusses a user script which is maintained by fellow flyertalk members to enhance the already powerful Matrix of ITA Software by providing new features and booking links.
Additional details and tips on the use of ITA's advanced routing code feature can be found in the following long-standing Mileage Run Discussion threads:

ITA Matrix Question on Segment Runs
I'm trying to optimize a Segment run for lowest cost per segment and have figured out how to use the
F F F /alliance star-alliance
code, searching return flights using the calendar option. Is there any way to specify an origin (BTV) without a destination ( or cycle through destinations easily) to search for low cost fares?
There must be a better way than trial and error.
Thanks.

Enter a city/airport, click on Nearby next to the text box, and pick a search radius around that city/airport in the box that pops up. Click on Select All.
I do that and search 500 or so mile radiuses for the lowest fare.

Google Flights > Matrix ITA Software
I was comparing Google Flights and Matrix ITA Software here and realized that Matrix ITA Software is quite inaccurate. Google Flights was accurate every time and you can even book through google flights. I'm not sure why everyone uses Matrix ITA Software. Any experts out there know why Matrix ITA is inaccurate at times? Thanks.

what is the nature of the problem?
First I have heard there are issues with ITA matix software?
For my part, it "found" two one-ways on different airlines I could not see on either UA or US sites.
Can you be more specific about the problem??

I've noticed inaccuracies from time to time on ITA Matrix, but they are few and far between. There are many reasons why people use it over Google Flights. You can specifiy more than 5 destination airports, you can force layover cities, can specify fare class, can specify specific airlines, can see the CPM, just to name a few.

I use the month-long search and the multi-destination options to search for low-priced flights to anywhere on any date. Unless I'm missing something, Google does not have that capability.
