about:awards, AwardWallet/GoMiles/etc alternative

Well, not entirely an alternative, but rather a small experiment I have worked on over a couple weekends in the past couple months. Below is the text from the project site on github. This is free/opensource software. This project is not associated with my employer (I work for Mozilla). I make no promise I am going to continue to work on this, it does what I need it to do. I'm posting to see if there is interest in this on FT, and if there are other software developers here who might be interested as well.

about:awards

This is a small experimental project I started up in reaction to sites like AwardWallet, etc. that ask users for their username and passwords to all of their travel award programs. While I do not feel these sites are evil, I do feel they take the wrong approach and are sacrificing the security of their users. Recently AwardWallet has taken a similar approach as I have, in order to work around American Airlines blocking their service. Both that effort and this experiment show that there is no reason why travel sites like AwardWallet should be asking users for their accounts on other sites.

You can see a screenshot.

This addon (Firefox only) uses the password manager in Firefox to discover what award programs you are a member of, and will automatically list them on the page. You need to click 'refresh' to retrieve the data. If a program you have does not appear, you can use the dropdown menu at the upper left corner to add any supported award program.

Currently supported award programs include:
  • Aeroplan
  • Alaska Air
  • American Airlines
  • Club Carlson
  • Marriott
  • Priority Club
  • Starwood
  • United Airlines

Installation

I may get around to pushing this up onto addons.mozilla.org, however for now you may download the addon from here

Once you have downloaded it, open it in Firefox to install, then in the URL bar, enter "about:awards".

Great initiative. You should after some response here probably start a new thread on milesbuzz^

I also dislike giving AW all PWs, and the option with keeping a cookie doesnt really work as I regularly clear them.

I use Google Chrome and the AA extension is working perfectly.

Extension works great for me! My only complaint is that it doesn't work on my iPhone app.

Glad I have all my travel pw's in a spreadsheet. B-folders is my other pw safe.

The only complaint I have about the AA extension is that it opens a separate tab/window to go to the AA site. There's got to be a way to not do that. Or at least automatically close it.

Even with the cookie option, you still pass your passwords to AW when you do a refresh. They just promise they wont store them on their servers. There is a slew of potential problems with that still.

I have a question about using Award Wallet to display Chase Ultimate Reward points.

I have both a Sapphire Preferred and an Ink Bold card.

For the Sapphire Preferred, I found Chase listed in the credit cards section, and I was able to add this program to Award Wallet. It works fine, and I can see the Ultimate Reward points that I've gotten with that credit card.

However, when I try to do the same thing for my Ink Bold card, Award Wallet gives me this message:

Error occurred. Chase online returned the following error:
You've provided us with valid credentials; however, unfortunately this type of account is not supported on AwardWallet, so we will not be able to display your account balance.

The problem appears to be on Chase's end. Since the Ink Bold is a business credit card, I sign on to the Chase website using my business user ID and password. This is a different sign-on than my personal Chase accounts. So it appears that a Chase business account cannot be viewed within Award Wallet?

Anyone have a way of viewing their Chase U.R. points earned with an Ink Bold card via the Award Wallet website?

Haha, I was wondering if it was bankruptcy linked.

I am in the same situation. Even with one login for both personal and business I can't get AW to display both balances.

Pardon a silly question a Friday night but I might be going blind after a long week... Is there any way I can upgrade someone else's account without asking them for the username and password, then to log in to their account?

Thanks..

Try emailing AwardWallet and ask if they are working on supporting Ink Bold accounts.

While not a solution, you can transfer Ultimate Rewards from your Ink Bold Account to your Sapphire Account any time you want (so then you could see them on AwardWallet in your Sapphire Account). You could transfer points every time a statement closed.

Log into your Chase Account. Click "Go to Ultimate Rewards." Click "Earn Faster," a menu option on the upper right, then select "Combine Ultimate Rewards Points." Enter the credit card number you want to send the points to, last name on the account, and number of points to transfer, then click "Next." Follow instructions to confirm.

Today the miles and points total on my account is off more than 433,000 miles.New bug?

Thank you so much for pointing this out! ^ I was not aware points could be transferred. I have several UR accounts for family members that I was keeping open just to keep the points banked. I just transferred them all to my account.
