HELP-computer keeps shutting down

Sorry to post such a general thing here-but FT has some of the smartest and least snarky tech gurus I have found.

My computer is trying two load two EXE files-and I wont it to stop loading them
It is causing my computer to crash(getting a blue stop screen-kernal stacking issue) after 10-30 minutes.
I have tried using the System restore service-which does get me some extra time-but it eventually crashes.
I am running windows XE
I have tried to fix this using dell''s help page as well as Microsofts wizard-but honestly I just cannot get this fixed.
So short of running a restore disk or taking it into Best Buy to have the geek squad fix it I am hoping to find help from you good folks
Thanks in advance for your advice,

Have you tried booting into Win XP Safe Mode? Hold down F8 as your computer boots, then select safe mode. Should give you some time to root out the problem.

once the machine is on, do cntl, alt, del. go to task manager>processes, and try to turn off the two exe files that are loading.

find what the files are, and get rid of them, or something to keep them from loading together, if that is the problem.

what are these files by the way

I've seen several computers lately with spontaneous reboot problems. Pretty nasty. One of them even had bogus blue screens and Windows splash screens. I tried to stop it with a Ctrl-Alt-Del and it reverted to the perfectly normal screen under it.

Suggestions: do a Google search and read up on

1) Antivirus XP 2008
2) Smitfraud

Both of these are not detected or removed by most antivirus or antispyware programs. There are a couple of free download remedies - Smitfraudfix and Malwarebytes. Download onto a flash drive on another machine, boot your computer into Safe Mode with Networking, load these two onto the pc, get the updates, and run them.

Good luck.

One is called sprtcmd.exe
Cannot find the other.
I rarely download anything-even updates unless I absolutley have to(i.e. adobe updates)

Here's info on the one .exe

May we assume that this is a Dell? If so, this seems to be a safe file, although the length of the download seems odd.

Cheers.

If you're sure that you just need to stop a file from loading, try this:
Click Start-Run, then enter MSCONFIG in the Open: box and click OK. MSCONFIG will open up, click the tab that says STARTUP. Look for the program that you don't want to run on startup and take the check out of the box next to it. When you are done, click Ok and let the PC restart.

If you don't see the file, download HijackThis and install and run it. It is similar but more powerful and a bit less intuitive.

If your not sure what is going on, download Malwarebytes' Anti-malware, Ad-Aware, and Spybot - Sesarch and Destroy.. Install them and run them one at a time in the order shown. Tell them to remove all the bad stuff they find. Be sure to let them update their file definitions before you run them.

It is a very good idea to run the SYSTEM RESTORE wizard and set a System Restore point before doing anything.

Good hunting..

wdwright advice is the best one:

From what I've googled, this is a problem associated with Dell Support Center, this is a software that dell uses to send patches/fixes/updates to your computer (something that you can do manual but its more tedious).

The 2 options are, uninstall it (From add/remove programs) or deter it from running at startup doing what wdwright said. I may also suggest that you check out both sprtcmd.exe AND dsca boxes. This will make that it won't run again at the beginning. If you need an update for your PC, just run it manually.

GL and tell us how it went!

Well unfortunately it finally crashed and died
So my choices are now to get it repaired(wiped)or put the $150(estimated)towards a new machine-this one is three years old and gets a lot of use.
I don't think I will go with Dell again, and I really would like to avoid Vista.
Asus has a very cool little desktop-super cheap Unfortunately no dvd/disk drive so that might be a problem.

Most of the time the hard disk drive went kaput. You can buy another new faster one for $50-$120 and install it yourself. Install windows from a backup or buy it for $100. Even cheaper is to borrow a drive from a friend to install it as a test. A 3-4 year old machine should be fine as a new one would certainly be over $150. good luck.

Curious what the symptoms are, as crashed does not necessarily mean died. The operating system can fail and the system will not boot but can be fixed by repairing/re-installing the operating system. The data files are often intact. There will be an error message.

Or you can be having other symptoms: nothing happens when you turn it on, or lights go on but nothing happens, or lights go on and you hear a series of beeps - these all indicate a system component failure.

Just wondering....
