I have an iPhone and the iPad I won in a contest. I have Kindle on both and I like it a lot on both. I am reading a lot more since I got it, which is a great thing. But in my opinion it is a lot nicer on the iPad due to the size of the pages. I like both, but if I have a choice, it is the iPad. What is really great is that I can use either for the same book, depending on availability of devices and circumstances.

Top 20 Travel apps for iPhone

I used to have 162 apps on my iPhone but it got ridiculous. Overtime, I've paired things down to 100. But, in truth, there are only 20 apps (or so) that you ever need on a regular basis. So, here are my favourites:

1) Things
I tried Omnifocus for a few months and while incredibly sophisticated it was too complex for getting things in and out quickly. I will miss it's sync to the cloud feature (Things doesn't use iDisk or MobileMe as a transport mechanism but syncs from device-to-device... which is a bit kludgy but works) but I prefer Things' minimalism.
2) Evernote
This is a great way to clip webpages from anywhere and have them synced to all your devices. It's ability to OCR photographs is very clever. I keep finding more and more things to upload to it. There's also a way to clip pages in the iPad's safari browser - which is very cool.
3) Instapaper
Another great way to clip articles and bits of info. A lot of other apps support it, too (Twitter, for one). The Editor's choice articles are also very interesting - added bonus.
4) Skype
now that you can dial from the iPhone's built-in contacts, it's the market leader. Truphone is also very interesting and I use this as back-up.
5) Newsrack
I've used a couple of RSS readers (e.g. Pro RSS) but this one is great and looks even better on the iPad. I love the ability to download images, too, for offline reading.
6) Pressreader
This is the motherlode of all newspaper delivery services. 1500+ newspapers on demand in their original format. Reading them on an iPhone is possible, because of the masthead click feature... but reading them on the iPad is a wet dream.
7) Facebook
This is a nicely contained app that provides a lot of Facebook features in one, self-contained envelope.
8) Yelp
User reviews are generally pretty good and it has a vibrant community. Their augmented reality monocle is very new but has tremendous potential. They have a lot of other innovative features that others lack.
9) Kindle
I love the ability to purchase once on Amazon and then read on any/all of my devices.
10) Twitter
This is my fav client (used to be Tweetie 2.0, until they were bought out).
11) iPeng
if you use the slimserver music system, this is a must-have. Squeezemote isn't bad (and just got better) but I think iPend is faster.
12) Zinio
The best of the magazine subscription services. Surprisingly, you can read magazines on the iPhone but on the iPad the experience is incredible.
13) Remote
Great way of controlling your Apple TV devices over WiFi
14) Flight Update Pro
I love getting status updates before the airline staff! Plus, this has nice seat maps on US domestic flights.
15) Readdledocs
This reads almost any PDF format I throw at it, plus MS word, excel and powerpoint. I like it's ability to access WebDAV servers and iDisk (MobileMe). It has a very slick interface on the iPad, too.
16) CamerFlash
The iphone's built-in camera doesn't take the greatest pics in low-light conditions. This app does a good job of pumping up the volume without degrading the image.
17) Pocketmoney
Great way to track expenses in multiple currencies. Exports to Excel, too.
18) Rhapsody
Access millions of albums online through your iPhone. Connect to a stereo system and it's like having the world's music on tap and on demand.
19) Snapture
taking pics of children, or other objects that move (people who blink, etc) is made easier with this app, because it can take 3 shots in rapid succession.
20) Air Mouse
need to control headless computers around the house? This is your app. Great for when you make a mac into an AV server (like a Mac Mini). Has some nice shortcuts. Although, on the iPad I prefer using a VNC client.

my favourites are:

1. FlightTrack
2. Lufthansa (Miles and More, bookings and so on)
3. Seat Guide
4. xGPS (use Maps without 3G)
5. Facebook
6. WhatsApp!
7. iWOL in connection to VNC
8. TeamViewer (for support during travel)
9. MVV (munich local train guide)
10. Payback

New update of Skype now works over 3G.

Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until the end of 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee.
I don't see a mention of Skype-to-public network calls, and I can't imagine ATT being happy about that possibility if it's free.

I heard a vague rumor that the upcoming version of the iPhone might permit tethering. Has this been confirmed, or was it just someone's wishful thinking?

ATT surely doesnt like it but Verizon started offering Skype calls over 3G with their Blackberries and Android phones. Nothing like competition ;)

Just downloaded it here in Tokyo, installed and registered and bought $15 worth of credit. Called a buddy in SFO and it worked like a charm. Awesome.

This makes absolutely no sense to me.

AT&T does NOT have a problem with it. Not only do they let BlackBerries and other phones do VoIP over data, they publicly said they had no restrictions on VoIP over data last fall.

Furthermore, there is no reason that Skype should charge for calls over the data network. Skype does not (or should not, at least) pay anything to AT&T or Apple for data transfer. No other app does--not even other VoIP apps...even the ones that allow VoIP-to-PSTN calls! This is just money-grabbing on Skype's part.

The only other thing I can think of is that there was a rumor when Skype was not updating their software to enable 3G calling that they had signed an exclusivity contract with Verizon. This could be a result of that and that they will have a feature like 3G calling which anyone can get for a small fee though you can get for free if you are on a partner network.

Well over at MacRumors and I'm sure elsewhere, there is this huge outrage about the Skype "small fee".

Also there seems to be this skype-to-skype confusion.
Yes, there seems to be a fee in the works for what is now free skype-to-skype but Skype seems to be backpedaling a bit already.

However, I think what is being missed here is that Skypeout calls work fine over 3G with the update. The intl long distance savings dwarf any "small fee".

Things will only be getting better in the next few weeks with OS 4.0 and the new sexy piece of hardware.

Cheers,

Scho

I'm in France with Orange and I just went to the App Store and saw the Skype update. Interesting though was it came from Skype S.A.R.L which is Skype, incorporated in France. I don't recall ever seeing that before. Maybe France is trying to increase its take through taxes?

But it said the same thing. Free til the end of the year, then charges apply. We'll see how it goes and how much the charges end up being.

I also like the new wideband codec feature!! It's about time. ^

And it works with a VPN connection over wifi now too!

wco81 May 31, 2010 9:42 am

Why Skype over VPN, additional security?

Skype is already encrypted.

So is there a fee only over 3G or over Wifi too? Can't imagine the latter because that will slow down the popularity of Skype, which is the fact that the service is free for Skype to Skype.

And international data can be more expensive than international voice roaming.

Few American iPhone users are able to use 3G data internationally.
