What are the advantages and disadvantages of jailbreaking an iPhone? How often does Apple send out an update that breaks the jailbreak? Are you concerned about malware apps?

Advantages include free software and being able to write your own apps without Apple's approval. Actually, I'm not sure about the last part, but I think that's the case. I don't have a jailbroken phone, but I've seen it, and they have a different "app store" that they go to that has different apps, some pirated, some not.

If you look early on in this thread, there is a lot of discussion on the subject. But there are many apps, some that are very important to me, that the App Store will not allow, or the developer doesn't want to bother with Apple. Plus you can take the next step which is unlocking your iphone so you can put other sim cards in which can save a fortune when traveling.

The jailbreak is "broken" on each new release, but the jailbreaking crowd has a new fix within days of each new release. It is a bit more complex that I can go into here though and depends greatly on the model and firmware you need.

I know we FTers like to have a ton of cards with status and stuff, but for those cards you do not care, there's an app that saves your card numbers in the airline/hotel's card image factor.
It's called "Cards on Mobile" and it's in the App Store.

Is this a new app, since nothing shows up in the app store.

Link for Cards-on-Mobile

nmenaker Apr 21, 2010 6:43 pm

interesting, search doesn't yield it. Thanks for the link will check it out. Normally when an app is approved, it is confirmed in the search database. Since this just came out on 4/15, could take a few days to find.

I searched for it and found it i the app store on my iphone. It does have a 1-star rating by 15 reviewers. Do the cards get stored on their servers? A few times, I've tried searching and it would reply "no connection to server."

I've found it quite useful. It stores images in a server and your personal information is stored in your iPod/Phone.

Although it requires a subscription, you can pay for it by sending new cards for their database, each card they take will yield 6 months of subscription.
I got 1 year of subscription by sending cards.
