I guess they're closing the entire set of SoCal stores; according to Yahoo! Maps, there used to be 19 within 50mi of me.

Store near PDX closing
The store closest to PDX is no longer listed as an active store. It's just off Airport Wy just east of I-205 near the Home Depot for anyone passing through.. After all, Oregon doesn't have sales tax.

I'm probably naive on this, but does it cost THAT much to inventory and move merchandise? In my case, my local CU store is closing, the next closest ones are 12 miles and 44 miles. Wouldn't it be cheaper to move transfer all the merchandise to those stores (or back to a central warehouse for redistribution) and close the stores immediately, than to have the store potentially open for months with ever-increasing discounts?

The chain had 150 MILLION in unsellable inventory. And if you check them out you'll see that a lot of the stuff they are discounting really isn't stuff you'd want them to move into your store; 1000's of crap ipod accessories, old sat radios, old bluetooth stuff, 2 year old phones etc...

Yep. After I saw this thread yesterday I stopped in (Rte17N) and spoke with one of the salespeople and he confirmed it. Oddly enough he said that particular location had the best sales performance.

Hard to believe. Aside from two stores in Manhattan, the nearest store to me now is in Orange, 79 miles away. Difficult to understand this in the most densely populated county in the most densely populated state. What's their new strategy? Real estate rent must be factoring in there somewhere.

They issued this press release last week, it's interesting one of the critera apparently as the layout of the store. That's a weird one. I don't think they can compete anymore, I know I haven't bought anything there in a very long time unless it was a clearance item, which they make like nothing at. Staples easily beats their price on just about everything, and they are all over the place for example. I can't picture them surviving unless they are the only choice for miles.
The closest store to me has a staples, walmart, best buy, circuit city, and probably a couple of others within a mile. When they were the only game, they were always busy, now just for the holidays.
CompUSA Announces Realignment Strategy
DALLAS, Feb. 27, 2007 - As part of its plan to realign the organization, CompUSA today announced a comprehensive strategy to improve the company's financial status. The realignment includes a cash infusion, store closures, major expense reductions and a corporate restructuring.
As part of CompUSA's realignment strategy, the company will receive a $440 million cash capital infusion. The financial boost will be designated to improve the company's balance sheet.
"Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics market, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or non strategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation. The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days, the company will close a total of 126 stores in the United States to focus on initiatives that enhance its top performing locations," said Roman Ross, chief executive officer, CompUSA.
CompUSA will continue to offer products and services at 1-800-CompUSA and online at compusa.com, providing more than 80,000 items for consumers and small and medium businesses, along with top-notch technical service from CompUSA TechPro.
Today's announcement allows the company to focus its efforts and ensure a strong presence in its 103 stores in 39 states and Puerto Rico.
