Cingular only, no 3G, no push mail. Does it work with Exchange? Doesnt seem like it has much to offer. Certainly not going to get a Cingular phone. Maybe generation 2 will have something to offer from my perspective.

It does have push mail and works with exchange. Cingular only with EDGE is correct. But it also uses Wifi whenever its available.

Assuming are able to unlock the phone, does anyone have information on data service in Europe for any Euro-wide carrier? I would like to be able to use my Treo's internet when in Europe this spring. Thanks.

So, at a time when Sony Ericsson has abandoned the form factor it pioneered with the P800 (P990? yuk!), Apple has come along and re-invented it. I think it will sell rather well. European pricing will be interesting though.

From reading their sparse information, it looks like push email from exchange works only if you have POP3 or IMAP enabled, which some / most will not.

It does all this stuff in an old crude clunky way in comparison.

You must have a Treo 650 from a parallel universe, because mine lacks WiFi and Mac OS X!

Let's face it: This phone doesn't do anything new. It will not succeed just because it works; if it succeeds, it will be because Apple (in their typical fashion) has made it work exceedingly well. Can't wait to get my hands on one and see if Apple has done something clearly better than the rest.

Talking

I can't wait to read the outrage of all of the fanboys if the device scratches or heaven forbid fingerprints smudge the touch screen too easily! LOL!!!

Hmm, very expensive, no 3G, not that much memory space (8gb if you plan to do movies and music is not too much) with no expansion slot to copy photos over without a computer, and battery life isnt that good (yeah right 5hrs my @$$. I never on any device got near manufactures battery life, including my iPod). Unless that phone unlocked w/o a contract is gunna equal a new ipod price, I ain't buying it. Its basically a smartphone with a nice looking housing

Doing a little math...

. $499 for the 4GB iPod
. . $40 x 12 for Cingular's cheapest voice plan for a year (mandatory
. . $20 x 12 for Cingular's unlimited* data plan for a year (mandatory)
+____
$1219 for your first year with an iPhone...ouch. Add in another year of mandatory service (unless you fork over the $150 ETF) at $720 and it brings the total to $1939...and we haven't even factored taxes and fees yet, bringing it over two grand.

*not truly unlimited; read the fine print

Interesting, but I'd be more inclined to spend the money on a Nokia N95 myself. It just seem more versatile to me and supports unlimited storage (with 2gb microSD cards). The N95 has HSDPA, WiFi, 5mp camera, GPS, etc.

Techie details -- it does web browsing without having to find a wireless network (which is better, anyway). And who cares about it running MAC OS X? What does that do for a typical user. It's about applications, not what's under the hood.

No 3G and no obvious PAM tethering are a deal-breaker for me, as is waiting until June to replace my dying, battered RAZR. A 700p it is.

No memory expansion slot? That's disappointing. I would have thought that Apple would have jumped at the chance to ram another portable memory card format we don't need down our throats.
