Oh I’m sure it was a thing. Phones are the most important thing in the world to HS kids. I was hoping fully grown adults had gotten passed it.

In years past, Android phones were less expensive and therefore more affordable for many around the world, including the US. IPhones have become status symbols, especially with younger people.

My comeback when asked about why I have an Android was:

iphones for show, Android for a pro

Quite honestly I don't give a toss, but when I did my decision was based on detesting itunes with a passion. So I have never bothered. Had a work iphone, it was fine, a few oddities, but Android does for me.

Originally, crApple was hated on my many Android users because they were so closed minded. You couldn't even use a custom ringtone, had to buy it from the Apple store... things like that. This pushed many to Android - likely your more technical users. Apple made their brand on it being simple (because it was so locked down) so the older or non technical crowds likely went that route. To this day, my dad insists that his iPhone was better than any Android phone even though he makes calls and barely texts - that's it. Can't tell you why, but he swears it was better - but refuses to pay the extreme prices for them.

From what I understand today, they aren't that bad anymore but still less customizable than Apple. Once you're invested in one ecosystem or the other, why change and start over?

Apple does have a history of marketing features like they are the newest/hottest thing out there while Android has had them for a while (and likely at a lower price). Never underestimate the combined power of a good marketing team and general human stupidity.

Even though I'm a Windows and Android person, I have to admire the marketing of Apple products and the loyalty of their followers. They do have the advantage of being the only manufacturer of devices that run their operating systems though, which might make the loyalty stronger. Apple have almost made the word 'iPad' synonymous with 'tablet' - like 'Hoover' and 'vacuum cleaner'

Back on topic though, I remember a joke that was going round when iPhones started gaining in popularity:
Q: How can you tell if someone in the room has an iPhone?
A: They'll tell you!

You should see the reaction I get from people when my blackberry key2 (my work phone) comes out.

Honestly though, I won't even consider an iPhone as a backup or Key2 replacement because of that stupid lightning cable.

I've been an android fan for a long time , blackberry and windows phone prior. I disliked how they locked everything down, the stupid itunes needed to be used for everything and non standard charging cable.
I am testing out iphone (SE 2020 , $149) for the first time and its not bad, has its quirks. They recently (iOS 14) let you do some customization (limited widgets) and you still have to do work around for custom ringtone but its manageable. My entire family uses iphones and its just "easier" to facetime and share pictures on imessage. My 93 year old grandpa loves getting good quality video/pictures of my son.

imessage and facetime are very popular but only in the US. Its hard to convert someone like my grandpa to a new app to send pictures/video , especially since google keeps adding/dropping apps (still using hangouts) I'm waiting to see what the 13 brings vs the foldables with samsung/pixel before I trade in my android for it. Worst case, I'll just use ipad for facetime/imessage with the family.

LOL, these type of statements crack me up. If you don't like iPhones or just prefer Android, fine, I've never been religious about these things (and don't really understand why so many are, it's a freakin' phone people), but I've been an iPhone user since the very beginning and I've literally never, ever, not once, not been able to charge my phone at night.

P.S. USB C charging hasn't even really been a thing that long, so obviously, you charged with some other cable prior to that, it just wasn't a lightening cable.

Exactly, new iPhones can be purchased at reasonable prices. The Se 2020 is a decent little phone. The article is based on a false premise that assumes all iPhone models are premium priced.
