Originally, crApple was hated on my many Android users because they were so closed minded. You couldn't even use a custom ringtone, had to buy it from the Apple store... things like that. This pushed many to Android - likely your more technical users. Apple made their brand on it being simple (because it was so locked down) so the older or non technical crowds likely went that route. To this day, my dad insists that his iPhone was better than any Android phone even though he makes calls and barely texts - that's it. Can't tell you why, but he swears it was better - but refuses to pay the extreme prices for them.
From what I understand today, they aren't that bad anymore but still less customizable than Apple. Once you're invested in one ecosystem or the other, why change and start over?
Apple does have a history of marketing features like they are the newest/hottest thing out there while Android has had them for a while (and likely at a lower price). Never underestimate the combined power of a good marketing team and general human stupidity.
