Don't all operators show which network you are on? At least in Europe they show GPRS, Edge, 3G and 4G. But as for 4G being different from LTE, it isn't. Yes I can see that some operators have put some labels on it, but that itself doesn't differentiate from all the various different flavors of LTE. There's LTE Advanced, LTE-U, LTE-TDD and -FDD, etc.

And just wait, 5G is right around the corner!

Some US carriers tried to market HSPDA+ as 4G before LTE fully arrived.

In Italy for instance, I've only seen TIM show 4G. Speeds were not bad, comparable to a lot of LTE in the US but for all we know, it might be bonded HSDPA+ to get the upper reaches of that tech.

Vodafone IT shows LTE when roaming on T-Mobile. I've never bought their SIMs so I'm not sure how it compares.

In the US, 4G on T-Mobile is definitely slower than LTE. Sometimes, in marginal LTE areas, it will flip between 4G and LTE within a few minutes. 4G will have more bars actually but be slower than LTE with fewer bars. Or maybe 4G indicates some switching state where you can't really get 3G or LTE because 4G seems slower than good 3G.

On iPhones with US AT&T or T-Mobile SIM cards "4G" means "3G" - that simple.

1. Go into your phone dialer and type:

*3001#12345#*

and then hit dial.

2. It will then go into Field Test mode. In Field Test select:

Servicing Cell Info

Note: "Service Cell Info" will not appear if you are not connected to an LTE network.

3. Look at the second option:

Freq Band Indicator

It should say 4, 12, etc.

With speeds it is all about how much of the bandwidth you are sharing with your neighbors. It seems that backhaul in the US is much slower and controlled than in Europe. In France when Orange first launched 4G as the iPhone 5S came out, I was getting about 175Mbps. As the weeks went by and more and more people got the iPhone 5s and the equivalent Samsung phone and it went down to about 40Mbps downloads.

Then I came to the US and found out just how slow LTE is here. And at more than triple the cost!

Don't know if this is the right place for this question but will the iPhone SE be updated when the 7 launches in the Fall?

Probably like a year after it was released.

They reserve their top SOCs for the iPhone flagship models in the Christmas quarter.

After decades with blackberry, most recently the Q10, I'm about a week with the SE and so far like it very much. The things I thought I would hate I don't mine as much. And the rest has been good. The main downside is no led notifications. The typing still sucks big time but I've been using voice dictation so that's better. I was never an app envy guy but now that I have it I won't be going back.

Have had iPads for years so knew the universe I just don't want to carry a big phone with me all of the time. I'll just use the mini if I need bigger.

Hopefully soon they will offer a 128GB version but so far so good

You can make the camera flash LED flash as an alert when there's an incoming call or text.

Saw that but could never get it to work reliably. Anyways, even if it did work as advertised it would be a poor and annoying substitute.

That was among the best things that Blackberry had. (And the most annoying.)
