I bet it could've been done by now had the developers ran with this concept instead of a dual-boot one.

There's also an Unbutu image that you can run in a card. But, wow, the instructions are long and complex.

true on both counts, and I was quite impressed with the speed of the android launch/overall on top of webos, sure missing a lot right now, but it was his FIRST alpha build, and that was quite impressive.

It is a chinese developer that brought mplayer and a java virtual machine to the webos phones long ago, back to playing around in webos 3.0 and has honeycomb 3.1 running on the chroot mode, which I give ^^

Just thought I'd update on the progress of Chroid (Android running as an app) :

Note that Chroid is buggy and doesn't support all of the Touchpad features. Unless someone wants to play with a subset of Android just for the heck of it, I'd suggest waiting for Cyanogenmod. Those folks are making amazing progress, and the "punch list" for a complete and thorough dual-boot Android for the Touchpad keeps getting shorter and shorter (down to only a dozen or so items, last time I checked).

I'll probably wait for a Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich port before making the switch. WebOS is pretty nice, and it has almost all the apps I need for it to be deemed useful enough to carry around.

I just got my Touchpad and am still learning the ropes but I find there's almost no apps that I want.

For example, the TP was really bought as a toy and my wife is going to use it to watch movies/tv shows on her flights. The included software only works for .mp4 files and re-encoded to certain resolutions. I tried to download another media players (probably made for the Pre) but no success. :(

I use this:

http://www.kalemsoft.com/site/produc...KSMPlayer.html

and it works great! My preference is to re-encode for the Touchpad's resoution, as it results in smaller files and I can carry more movies. However, the Kalemsoft player should be handle to most anything. Make sure that you get the Touchpad version, and not the one for the Pixi/Pre.

You can also save $1 here:

What do you use to encode?

How large is each movie file? (Like a 90-minute movie.)

Handbrake. It's free and works great!

I'm WTP today (Without Touchpad), having inadvertently left it home, so I can't look. My recollection is that they were in the 600-800 Mb range. I have a 32 gig Touchpad, so I'd have no problem carrying a huge video library with me when I travel.

Here's something interesting, too: I've been reading that the TP's WebOS has drivers built in that support some USB hardware. The information is contradictory, but there have been suggestions that it might be possible to use a USB thumb drive on the TP's USB port -- it requires a special kind of USB adapter, the name of which escapes me at the moment (though I ordered one and received it last week -- I just haven't been able to play with it), and a power source, e.g. a powered USB hub. I'll report back when I've had a chance to play with it, but it might offer a means of expanding the TP's storage beyond the 16/32 Gb that's installed.

Oh, that's why it wouldn't work for me. I was slumming around in Precentral and only saw the Pixi/Pre versions.

Another great free program (which uses the same encoding core as Handbrake) is XVid4PSP. You can choose the iPad setting and let it go. I prefer this program as it offers control and options for every other video setting whereas Handbrake has pretty much limited itself to iProduct settings.

Here's a thread about it...

IMO, having stuff hanging off the sides of a tablet/phone defeats the purpose of ease of portability. But, certainly useful to getting stuff to/from the TouchPad.

Sure, it impacts portability some. However, when I fly trans-Pac, I always carry one of these:

http://ak.buy.com/PI/0/300/212003408.jpg

which will keep all my electronics powered through the flights, connections and any delays. I wanted the Touchpad primarily for watching movies in flight -- it's got a nice big screen and is smaller and lighter than a laptop (and can be opened and set on a tray table with the person in front of me fully reclined). It's easy enough to keep the external battery out, and thumb drives take up no room at all. All of my music is on my iPod Classic but, with a thumb drive, it's easy enough to put all my music on that and listen using the Touchpad (I also have a pocket-sized headphone amplifier). There are also much smaller xPal Energizer batteries which provide more than enough power to supply the 5 volts that USB drives and the like are looking for.

With one of these:

it's an easy matter to set up everything I might possibly need to entertain myself in flight without the hassle of trying to accommodate my laptop.

A nice feature of the Touchpad

As you Touchpad owners may know, the Touchpad offers the option of "Exhibition Mode," when it is placed in the Touchstone inductive charging stand. I've bought a couple of these, one for home and one for work. Apparently, the Touchpad knows which Touchstone it has been placed in because it will open a different Exhibition Mode app depending on which stand it is in. When I place it in the stand at home, it opens into an Alarm and Weather app (I now use it for my alarm clock). When I place it in the stand at work, it opens into a Time and News app.

Pretty clever!
