Anyone know a current source for a $99 HP Touchpad?

Everyone seems to be sold out. I guess I got on the bandwagon too late.

pseudoswede Aug 22, 2011 3:16 pm

Your last legitimate chance was probably two hours ago, when TigerDirect/CircuitCity/CompUSA put their's on-sale. It sold out within minutes.

Newegg is probably the last major retailer not to have adjusted their price, and no one knows when/if they will.

HP has also stated any TouchPad shipments received from some retailers will be re-sold for the discounted price.

Doc Savage Aug 22, 2011 3:20 pm

The best way to keep up with the latest availability is to watch slickdeals.net . I got wind of the Barnes and Noble sale from them last night before it was all sold out. You can set up alerts on the site to let you know when there are new posts, but you would likely get hundreds of alerts as the threads on that site have gone crazy.

Lots of very rabid bargain hunters there checking out all the possible sites, so you will probably hear on that site first.

I talked to the worker bees at a BestBuy on Saturday, and they said they had packed up all their stock to send back to HP for credit, so likely HP will be getting a bunch back in. You likely have to keep watching pretty closely to get in on deals ASAP when they are available.

Good luck!

pseudoswede Aug 22, 2011 3:22 pm

The SlickDeals thread is nearly impossible to track. Roughly 40-80 new posts every minute.

sonofzeus Aug 22, 2011 3:22 pm

Amazon UK has them.

They've been creating new threads when a new retailer opens up some stock, though, so it is possible. That's how I saw the B&N sale last night.

Harvey Norman (Australia) has some left A$98.

Oops sorry that's about US$Bazillion at the moment :)

The inquirer reports "adjusted" pricing effective in the UK now.

Braindrain Aug 22, 2011 3:45 pm

I'd check your local CL's over the next few days to look for the ads where people have bought but are "less than enthused" about the product. Not having an Android ROM for it right now also doesn't help. :(

First beta came out this morning, although it has been pulled.

1.Call and ask where they will ship to and to lower their price to the new MSRP.

2. FNAC.com has them too and ships only to French addresses.

Amazon usually has the worst updates on pricing. Here's one from Curry's UK showing the 32GB model for £115.

That was FAST. I was reading about this last night as the group was just "started" last Saturday. Problem is, it's hitting mainstream media which is never good news for these sorts of things.

FNAC has them, but for 608 Euros. I've got a cousin in France I could have it shipped to, but not at that price.

Unavailable for home delivery -- must be picked up in the store.

I guess it's time to find a MR to LHR? ;)

Check out the inquirer feed as it lists a few more stores.

If I could afford the MR, I wouldn't need to buy a cheapie tablet. ;)

However, I figure the cost of shipping to the Americas will probably be at least half of the purchase price.

Or, you could buy from one of Doc Savage's Amazon-listed places and they'll probably kick in shipping for free.

Doc Savage Aug 22, 2011 4:49 pm

Looks like some availability now from expansys with free shipping but a slightly higher price.

Here is the slickdeals thread

Edit: It looks like the site is getting hammered

I finally got through and went to check out but it errored out saying my cart was empty. Now the page is gone. I suspect they were not expecting the number of orders.

May have to keep hitting reload till you get back on....

Good luck!

I think once it hits slickdeals, it also hits the fan.

Apparently, their site manager started blocking checkout. According to Slickdeals (thanks for the reference!), it's gone, but I'll keep looking. I made a Buy in Now Best Offer on eBay for $150 (for the 16gb) hopping it was someone who snagged a bunch of these. Haven't heard, but I'm not hopeful.

If you are looking for a reasonable little tablet to use for web access, email, etc, the Nook Color really works pretty well, and buy.com has them for $169 (refurb). I actually use mine a lot, it is a great ereader, and certainly sufficient for staying in contact. If you are adventurous, you can even reprogram it to have more Android tablet capabilities like some in this thread:

Boo To You CDW

So I thought I'd be slick and get up this early to hit the websites like CDW that had offices closed over the weekend and were still listing the Touchpad at full price.

8am est I had about 10 websites open and 3 different phones going calling their customer service hotline. You name it, if they had the product in stock I was on the phone trying to get them to price match. I finally spoke to a semi decent customer service agent at CDW who told me management was in a meeting trying to decide if they were going to drop prices or keep them at $549. I was told there was a 30 no questions asked return policy if unopened and that the order would take a few hours to process and I could cancel before it shipped out. Figuring I had nothing to lose I rolled the dice and bought 2 32 gig and 1 16 gig. I get an invoice, my CC is charged and we're all set. I spent a few more hours (Mondays are dead in Aug) prowling the web to see if I can beat the deal I have.

2 hours later I call back to CDW and they said they had just decided to drop the price to $99/$149 like everyone else. Woo hoo, score!!! After the phone call I was sent an invoice for the corrected pricing on my 3 Thinkpads.

So this evening rolls around and I figure I better check my tracking info etc. The website lists my order as processing and I get a bit nervous. Quick phone call to CDW and then I get to spend half my evening on hold  Finally I get some one in customer service who tells me my 2 32 gig Touchpads have shipped. I tell her thanks and ask for a ship date on the 16 gig. Unbelievably she tells me I didn't order a 16, just 2 32 gig. She then proceeds to tell me I was never invoiced for one and she has no idea where I got the idea that I ordered 3 total products. Of course, I have the invoice open in front of and my 3rd grade skills of reading haven't left. Bottom line, I'm out of luck on the 16 gig but as a curtsey she'll leave a message for my salesman to credit my Amex for the 16 gig that didn't ship.

While I'm happy I got 2 Touchpads (although neither is for me) I'm pretty upset about the customer service. At the very least they could have contacted me to tell me the 16 gig was sold out. Certainly the last time I'll do business with CDW.

Tryp the HP business site (not the HP home site). They were not reporting Out of Stock even while HP Home was. Plus, HP is likely your best shot to get a unit once retailers send back any of their unsold models.

Per the HP tweets, the SMB thing on Monday was a glitch. SMB has been 100% out-of-stock since Sunday and will not get any more.

If they're this popular maybe HP will reconsider and keep making them. Is that wishful thinking?

After a $400,000,000 writeoff....

They sold like hotcakes at $99, but they apparently cost more than $300 to build. I don't think anyone will be jumping to make more.

It's a great tablet and the OS is really well done, but there's just no room for a third player after iOS and Android.

Interesting!

I went to my local BB today and there was line. I missed getting one by about 6 people. I'll try again tomorrow.

If you go to the BB website and use the store locator to find stores near you, it will display them with store number.

All local Best Buys and Radio Shacks are sold out. CompUSA (TigerDirect) seems to have them, but they're refusing to sell their inventory.
