Latest news from HP...

Despite announcing an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand. We don’t know exactly when these units will be available or how many we’ll get, and we can’t promise we’ll have enough for everyone. We do know that it will be at least a few weeks before you can purchase. See more information in the updated FAQs below.

@PTravel - This is a public forum - this is no different from the deals on Mileage Runs

I know, hence the ";)". I didn't think I'd ever wind up using the expression, but, "lighten up, Francis!"

The ;) smiley is used when someone is being sarcastic.

Wow awesome. I wonder if they still would be at close out price? Otherwise I wonder why they would do another run since they were supposedly losing $200 on each tablet sold

Could be that there were enough parts in the pipeline to support a final run.

1) AFAIK the next/last batch will be priced differently.

2) Waiting anxiously for Jeff Bezos' Quad Core Honeycomb Jewel in < 30 days for $299.

If it is priced much higher than the $99 price, I think they'll have a hard time selling that batch. People won't want to pay $200 for something that they were selling for $100 because they couldn't sell them.

cordelli Aug 31, 2011 7:11 am

Read a story yesterday that said they had committed to a certain number from the company that makes them, and the companies that makes them will not let them out of that contract.

On the bright side, $200 for the 16gb version would still be better than the $225-$250 Buy It Now price point on ebay.

That's an interesting point. I've been looking at eBay from time to time and noticed that prices had started around $200 (a 100% profit for the sellers) but recently was as high as $300. It will be interesting if the prices drop after "Touchpad Fever" subsides. I noticed the same thing happen with eBay prices for HP thin clients about the time that MagicJack started to become popular (the HP thin clients make ideal phone servers for MagicJack).

The sellers also have to pay Ebay fees (??), taxes on initial purchase (~$15 - $20), Paypal fees, etc., so there is not that much profit for them. Although I hate when electronics, tickets, etc sell out because of "resellers"

Also, paying $200 and being able to buy it from a store is much more attractive to the majority of people versus going on Ebay.

How much would they be willing to pay if the next/last batch has ATT/TMobile/GSM capability and more?

Not paying over $99 for a picture frame.

;)

I wouldn't pay one penny more. WiFi is all that I need.

I'd only be interested in one for similar reasons.

sonofzeus Aug 31, 2011 12:31 pm

We have 3 "no mas" votes.

Looking forward to seeing how many 4G LTE unlocked TPs are sold @ $200 without contract.

pseudoswede Aug 31, 2011 4:27 pm

Make it a fourth "no". If I need internet connectivity whilst outside any type of free/home/friend wifi, my cell phone can create its own hot spot.

I've been fiddling with my 32GB. It's pretty neat, and it definitely runs better after running all of the tweaks listed everywhere. Reading PDFs and PPTs are a breeze, and much more comfortable in an armchair than a desk chair.

Rumors on SlickDeals that Staples has "sporadic" availability this week. People say they have ordered and received a TouchPad. Can't validate, but there's lots of discussion in the thread about various ways to try to get one. Good luck.

Do you have a link? I can't find the thread, other than threads about cases

I heard a rumor as well that the last batch might be 3G or even 3.5G (HSPA+) which is attractive simply for the fact that I could pop in my Mobile Broadband SIM (if the frequencies were right) and surf almost anywhere.

Added to that would be nice have an unlocked tablet for overseas use with pre-paid DATA.

FINALLY got an update from HP SMB

It has taken us longer than anticipated to work through the high volume of orders that were received. We apologize for any uncertainty this caused, but we are now in a position to understand our ability to fulfill your order.

Your order will be fulfilled at the discounted price. As we sold out of our existing stock very quickly, we are in the process of re-allocating stock to SMB customers. We should receive this stock within 2 weeks, at which time your order will then ship with free ground shipping. You will receive a shipping notification with a tracking number once your order has shipped. We apologize that these timelines are longer than indicated on the website at time of purchase.
From various people talking to various CSRs, the company line is now that most SMB orders will be shipped out 9/14-9/16.

Well for what its worth I was unable to get any of the rock bottom cheapo UK ones but I got one from an HP distributor via ebay - a 32gb for £225 and then saw they had a few 64gb for £299. So wifey and I have two unexpected TouchPad.

Great and worth the cash.

Braindrain Sep 4, 2011 7:33 pm

64GB? Is this a uk-only version?

Yes, Europe only. As an added bonus, it wants to be just like an iPad and has a white bezel and back.

I haven't seen many - but it is a bit faster than my wife's 32gb.

Some are being sold on ebay.

dan1431 Sep 5, 2011 6:03 am

I think the 64GB units are running a slightly faster processor, but I am not sure about that.

I remember reading somewhere that a Touchpad was going to be running a faster processor but I cannot find the article anymore nor can I remember if the article referred to a Tochpad with more memory (i.e. the 64GB unit) or a Touchpad with GSM onboard.

Yes, the 64gb model runs on a 1.5GHz processor (as opposed to 1.2GHz). Although, using Preware, you can overclock your 16/32gb model to 1.5-1.7GHz (in exchange for battery life, of course).

It's the same CPU on all models. On the 16/32GB models it's underclocked to 1.2Ghz, whilst on the 64GB model it's set to it's correct speed of 1.5Ghz.

"Overclocking" the smaller models to 1.5Ghz thus isn't really overclocking the CPU, although there could still be issues with overheating the unit as a whole.

If you can overclock the 1.2's to 1.5 - what would the 1.5's be overclocked to?

I was trying to get to grips with Govnah but Govnah seems to have max settable speed of 1.512 Ghz.

If new batch of touchpads will have 3G connectivity I think I will be willing to pay up to $250 for it. (16GB). Since it is really convenient to have signal without messing with tethering thru the phone and such

6-8 weeks for me to receive my 32gb from HP...ah well, no rush.

PTravel Sep 10, 2011 7:13 pm

So I broke down and paid more . . .

I just bought a 32GB from eBay for $279. Here's my thinking:

I'm on the hp list to be notified when the new production run comes in. However, I suppose there are tens of thousands of people on that list, too. I may or may not get one -- if I do, I can sell it on eBay (or keep it). If not, I expect eBay pricing to continue going up. This tablet will do everything that I need a tablet to do, so anyway you look at it, I've got a good, inexpensive tablet. And, if cyanogen completes the Android OS hack . . . well, so much the better!

Braindrain Sep 10, 2011 10:04 pm

$279?

Have you checked your local CL? Probably some going for lower.

I didn't have time to go running around looking (and this is for the 32 Gb one).
