Best bet is to keep a very close eye out for HP.com restocking.

Can use Chrome extension PageMonitor to monitor any web page for changes. I am doing this with multiple online vendors.

Thanks for the tip on "PageMonitor" just added it.

Quick OT question? do you use "PageMonitor" to watch FT threads of interest. I set up Monitoring on a FT thread I follow, and though it says the page has changed there is no discernible changes to me, thinking that maybe the posters post count have changed, causing it to appear as though the page content has changed.

sonofzeus Aug 23, 2011 4:03 pm

Fry's in Campbell CA has the 32gb for 149 plus tax (pickup only).

hfly Aug 23, 2011 10:37 pm

Just tried currys in the UK, seems that no store anywhere around London has them available for pick up.

sonofzeus Aug 24, 2011 4:38 am

Sam's Club has them for pickup @ some locations.

I just printed a free one day pass and will head out soon.

Yea that is the post counts changing. In the advanced mode you can access under extentions/options/ you can select what area of the website to watch. Like for the HP site I just selected the area where the price/out of stock would appear. Not sure what section you'd select for forums...

Can't you also just subscribe to a thread and it will PM/email you when people post?

Thanks for the headsup on PageMonitor.

It should come in handy now and after the dust clears.

Was #34 at my local Best Buy (probably the one that does the most sales in Colorado) about 50 minutes before they opened. They got 135 total. Actually took them until 10am to allocate all of them.

PTravel Aug 24, 2011 11:49 am

I went to my local BB today (again), but they had none. One of the employees said they were getting a truck tomorrow morning, but he didn't know if they were getting more. I'm going to try again tomorrow. This has become a matter of honor! :)

It's a great tablet and the OS is really well done, but there's just no room for a third player after iOS and Android.

How many have sold so far? If it's really good didn't they just become a player? Yeah, they lose a lot of money, but now they're out there. Obviously, I'm not much of a business man, but it just has me wondering.

From what I've heard, it costs HP $300/unit to manufacture, so they're taking a pretty significant loss dumping them at these prices. However, this also shows the magic number for a decent tablet -- at $99, it seems that everyone would buy one.

I agree. To me, a tablet is similar to a netbook (with less functionality, IMO). If it costs me more than a netbook to buy one, I'm not game. If it's less (and I'm still waiting on my 32GB order with HP), I'll jump in.

I'm actually taking a serious look at the Viewsonic G, if I can't snag an HP. The HP would be fun to play with, but apparently there are serious (and successful) efforts to port Android to it, with Froyo available and Honeycomb pending. As far as I'm concerned, as long as a tablet has reasonably good battery life, a nice enough screen, WiFi a back-facing camera for conferencing, and access to the Android market, it's fungible with any other tablet. Woot just had the Viewsonic G for $239 (someone posted it here, I think). Costco has a Vizio that looks similar for $289.

Best Buy was allocated 250,000. In the first six weeks, it only sold 25,000 nationwide. It took a firesale (at more than a loss of $200 per unit*) to get their inventory sold.

* - HP is taking this loss, as it's crediting back monies to BBY.

pseudoswede Aug 24, 2011 11:40 pm

I think some Best Buys will be getting an additional shipment this week.

Inventory Tracker - 16GB

Inventory Tracker - 32GB

Basically, if it says "In Stores Only", you better be within minutes of one, or else you'll probably miss out. Granted, a little bit of small talk with the BBY employees should reveal when they get their inventory truck. Once you find out that information, be either in-store or very close to it around that time. Fortunately for the Denver area, it's around 7am on Wednesdays and Saturdays. That means the inventory tracker is updated long before the stores open.

HP now says OUT OF STOCK in red. Did they restock it overnight and sell out again?

That was removed early yesterday when they changed to the "out of stock" non-button.

thetravelabstract Aug 26, 2011 9:25 am

I have heard that BB has been selling them off this morning. If you were lucky enough to wake up early and wait in line you could have gotten some.

I dont know when HP is gonna update their site but when it does it will crash. haha. When it first went on sale last Friday the site was mobbed and sold out real fast. I do not remember exactly what time the price changed but I think it was close to midnight.

Jinxy Aug 26, 2011 12:17 pm

all the stores near me sold out within 10mins of the announcement going live...no doubt we will see them on deals websites for triple the price within the next week

It began on day one with the $99 16GB Touchpad going for upwards of $230 on eBay.

As well as the usual scam posts that list the item for $10 Buy it now but are actually just selling information on where to get it.

Gotta love the frenzy caused by a great deal.

pseudoswede Aug 26, 2011 2:22 pm

Sam's Club had some 32GB models via their website. I had one in the cart, but since I'm not a member, didn't feel like paying the 10% premium. Sold out in under 5 minutes.

You can set up alerts on the site to let you know when there are new posts, but you would likely get hundreds of alerts as the threads on that site have gone crazy.

Lots of very rabid bargain hunters there checking out all the possible sites, so you will probably hear on that site first.

I talked to the worker bees at a BestBuy on Saturday, and they said they had packed up all their stock to send back to HP for credit, so likely HP will be getting a bunch back in. You likely have to keep watching pretty closely to get in on deals ASAP when they are available.

Good luck!

The whole point of HP slashing price to $100 so retails can sell off all units so HP doesnt have to take back any shipments. I believe HP will most likely reimburse BB who paid like $350 for each touchpad most likely

loomis Aug 29, 2011 7:36 am

I suppose that HP has to hold back some inventory for inevitable warranty replacements down the road.

Anyone with any update on where to get these for HP's close out price?

Check Ebay in about 2 weeks. My guess is the price will settle at about $150 - $175.

That's an interesting point. I've been looking at eBay from time to time and noticed that prices had started around $200 (a 100% profit for the sellers) but recently was as high as $300. It will be interesting if the prices drop after "Touchpad Fever" subsides. I noticed the same thing happen with eBay prices for HP thin clients about the time that MagicJack started to become popular (the HP thin clients make ideal phone servers for MagicJack).

HP IS RIDICULOUS!

HP has been telling everyone that more pads are "coming soon" for like a week straight blah blah blah now check out this .........

Q: When is HP getting more HP TouchPads? One week, two weeks, a month?\

We will have more information available in the next few days about whether or not more will be available and if so, what the details will be about the situation.

Why is that ridiculous? They have 100's of authorized retailers that have orders, they may have returns from other vendors. When you deal with ten of thousands of units, managing inventory is a major undertaking.

Of course everyone feels they deserve a $99 tablet, but with margins on these at -$300, I doubt HP are putting too much effort into getting them counted.

Agreed. I'm angry, but only with myself for not having gotten in on the deal when it was first announced.

I placed my order with HP SMB early Saturday afternoon (8/20). I'm still waiting for them to ship out my TouchPads. I've called twice about a high-level ETA, and all they can say is they will ship "in a few days".
