Bangkok airport express train to open next week

Wed, Aug 18, 2010
AFP

BANGKOK, THAILAND (AFP) - An elevated train line linking Bangkok's city centre and its main airport will be fully open for service next week after months of delays, the Thai state railway said Wednesday.

The non-stop "airport link", which covers 28 kilometres and cost 25.9 billion baht ($1.1 billion), will officially open on Monday. Trains are due to run daily every 40 minutes, between 6am and midnight.

After months of test runs, the express service will offer passengers a 15-minute journey to Suvarnabhumi airport from Bangkok's centre for 100 baht, a spokeswoman for the State Railway of Thailand said.

Passengers returning the same day will not need to purchase another ticket.

A second city line will offer a 30-minute journey at a cheaper rate, stopping at eight stations along the way.

The trip takes 15mins but you still need to wait 40mins for your train.

Do they only have one train set? 15 minute trip from BKK to downtown, 5 minute wait, 15 minute trip back, 5 minute wait = 40 minutes.

Hours of operation

(Operating hours have been mentioned earlier in this thread, but it's worth repeating due to news articles recently, and for the benefit of recent joiners to this thread.)

There's been some confusion from different news articles about what the hours of operation are.

According to the following website:

http://airportraillink.railway.co.th/en/index.html

(which appears to be the "official" website for the new lines)

in the menu choices under "Service Route" it states that the SA Express line will operate from 06:00 to 01:00. The SA City Line will operate 24/7.

Not sure if this is accurate or current, but it is a resource to refer to.

The Bangkok Post (with their impeccable journalism) has stated differing info in today's print edition. I cannot find the article online to give a link.

It appears that the city line will run 24 hours. No need to wait for the express run. This is kind of backwards, if you ask me.

The article linked to above states otherwise:

Passengers using the City Line, the all-stops line, will pay a flat rate of 15 baht for a trip during the promotion period. The line, which operates from 6am to midnight, takes 30 minutes to travel from Phaya Thai station to Suvarnabhumi airport.

So now we need to find out what info is legit

Looks like the live reports here on FT will seperate journalism from the truth.

Services of both the Express Service and the City Line will be operational on the same tracks at speeds of up to 160km per hour, the train will serve eight stations and can cater up to 50,000 passengers daily.

The Express Service is a 15-minute non-stop journey between the City Terminal and the airport with a fare at Bt150 per trip. During the opening period, the fare charged will be Bt100.

Meanwhile, on City Line commuter trips, with set fares at Bt15-Bt45, take 30 minutes to reach the airport, departing from Phaya Thai, Ratchaprarop, Makkasan, Asoke, Ramkhamhaeng, Hua Mak, Ban Thap Chang, and Lat Krabang stations, and. will end at the last stop of Suvarnabhumi.

The promotional fare will be Bt15 for all journeys during this period.

I believe the Express Service is probably intended for travelers while the City Line is for workers at Suvarnabhumi Airport and its vicinity.

I agree it's INTENDED to be like that. But I don't INTEND to wait for an express train when there could be 2 local runs during that time.

I'm assuming the whole schedule will need re-working. TIT.
