Malaria Tablets
Wanting to get a recomendation. We are going on a tour to Thailand, Cambodia, Veitnam and Loas.
Malarone , or the generic, has been advised. Can anyone reccomend a pharmacy in Bangkok and an aproximate price? Trying to decide whether to get it in London or wait till Bangkok.

My wife and I spent 8 months travelling through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia.
We looked at pros and cons of tablets and decided against it based on cost and side effects (often very bad).
Seem to remember that the tablets don't actually protect you against malaria but just give you a head start with regard to the treatment. Our plan was that if we had any symptoms then would get checked out and then head to KL/Singapore/Bangkok or anywhere we were close to that had good health care.
If if you are following the tourist trail then you are very unlikely to come in contact with malaria.
Now dengue fever ever is a bigger concern but no tablets for that......

Once you have seen someone in a hospital bed suffering from malaria it gives you a reason try for good prevention. This includes mosquito spray, deet wrist/ankle bands, being careful and antimalarials.
So if anyone else wanting to "educate" me about antimalarials can save their post.
Just trying to decide where to buy generic malarone, not whether to buy it.

Not sure what medication you were prescribed or thought you would be prescribed. The new medications, or even an antibiotic, have very few, if any side effects.
i wasn't prescribed anything. I did my research of available products at the time (2010) and decided the side effects weren't worth the minimal risk I was
Once you have seen someone in a hospital bed suffering from malaria it gives you a reason try for good prevention. This includes mosquito spray, deet wrist/ankle bands, being careful and antimalarials.
agreed. We went with prevention by way of deet. If there was a product on the market that you could take that would completely prevent malaria I would have been far more keen. Alas, there was not and that coupled with the cost made it a less than ideal proposition.

It looks like it may be restricted here (in Thailand) so you'll need to visit a hospital, doctor or specialized travel clinic.
I've seen prices quoted in the 150 baht/dose range; it might be called Malanil (GSK) here?
Most local health experts say that unless you plan to be in heavily forested areas after dark (where infection rates are high and transmission a possibility) that a malarial prophylaxis is both unnecessary and the side effects worse.

There are a lot of other, worse (OK, maybe not worse, but more easily contracted and potentially life-threatening) health problems here, Dengue and leptospirosis for example.

I've been to a number of travel doctors over the years, often about Southeast Asia, and not once has one of them recommended a malaria prophylaxis for Thailand, unless I was planning to travel to jungle forest areas.
Like Hawes7701 said, dengue is a much bigger concern and the only thing you can do about that is avoid mosquitoes. Though it seems like there may be progress on a vaccine for that one.

I've been racking my brain trying to come up with numbers, buy can't. All I can recall is that I bought them retail in the US and when I saw the prices in Cambodia and Thailand I was annoyed at myself.
As a prophylaxis, my insurance did not cover the script ... paid out of pocket ... regretted it.
That said, if I picked up a counterfeit batch in SEA, and got sick, I'd have regretted it.
NB: I lived in Cambodia for a time and twice bought counterfeit diabetes meds, so it does happen, even at the good places.

If you're worried about malaria, then do what you gotta do. I've never heard anyone talk about it except while touring the Panama Canals.
Dengue is what is mostly talked about in SE Asia. Zika is kinda the new hotness at airports.

What are the current thoughts on taking an anti-malarial like Malarone for traveling to BKK / Phuket / Krabi / Phi Phi, then over to Siem Reap, Cambodia for 3 days to visit Angkor Wat? My primary care physician here in the US prescribed Malarone, and I filled the prescription, but he's not a Tropical Medicine doctor. And when I went to Bali a while back, my Tropical Medicine doctor simply advised to wear tropic weight long pants / long shirts and avoid mosquito exposure, etc.

There is no need for malaria pills in Thailand, to be honest. Cambodia might though, I am not sure.
The only time I have taken Malarone was in Borneo, and neither myself nor my parents had any side effects

I ended up taking malaria prophylaxis (doxycycline) when I did Indochina- I was there for 4 weeks and only 1 week was in a malarial zone but because my brain is chronically fried I elected to just take it daily the whole trip
