(FWIW, the originating point will be Sukhumvit Soi 22 Marriott Marquis on a Tuesday for an 11:50 am flight.)
Not sure what hassle you refer to? Flown domestically on Nok Air from DMK numerous times and only issue has been either usual Bangkok traffic or the missus being slow getting ready to leave THEN the traffic! Taxi would be a bit of a trek to the expressway from soi 22 so would need to allow extra time. But if only hand baggage I’d be tempted to skytrain it to Mo Chit then catch the dedicated bus (not sure of number as I’ve never done it).

When you first walk in the walkway is quite narrow and crowded, but the security and immigration lines out are not usually bad and once you get through security the airport is not crowded at all. There is a Starbucks, a Thai bakery and a McDs. My AirAsia flights have always left from the basement and required a bus ride from the terminal to the plane.

I prefer flying domestic out of DMK, over BKK.
The airport is 10km closer.Bus gates suck, but I get those at both airports lately.Traffic can be messy. Use tollway to avoid.

Phase 2 of the expansion project.

The image above is the new satellite terminal they are building. It will be connected to the main terminal by underground rail. It will take the airport from 45 million passengers per year capacity to 65 million capacity.

If you're unfamiliar with that, are you aware of the new terminal in operation at UTapao?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-Tapa...port_expansion
Capacity is now 3 million per year.

I knew about the expansion(and Utapao), I jsut didn't get what was in the picture and where it is in relation to what's currently there. There was also supposed to be a new domestic terminal. Is that in there somewhere?

Does anyone know what time PG check-in opens at BKK? I'm able to find plenty of information as to when check-in closes, but none as to when it opens. The ticket office seems to open at 4AM, but there's no indication that applies to check-in.

It looks like their first departure (PG metal) is PG 927 to PNH at 06:10, so I've got to think they must open for check-in by 04:00, if not earlier? No clue if they accept any/all departures for check-in based on some schedule?

What time is your flight? International or domestic? Are you overnighting at the airport?

It's not booked yet, but we're planning to grab one of the early departures to USM. Coming in on TG from NRT around 10pm, but with the F escort customs and immigration shouldn't take too long.

I've been trying to figure out what to do in the interim. We're likely to be well-rested so I don't think that a hotel is necessary, and we'll be spending 4-5 days in Bangkok on the return, so there's no pressing need to go into the city. I'm open to suggestions you have any ideas.

Why do I think that they'll bus people back to the main terminal building for five years while the rail link is "finished"? (OK, so it looks like the inter-connecting train is being built concurrently, according to the video in the skyscrapercity link, post # 1623, looks like a tunnel and "rolling" stock.)

BKK handled 59 million passengers in 2017.

It looks like the first departure to USM is PG 121 at 07:20 (today anyway).

While a few hundred, maybe more, people overnight at the airport, what do you plan to do for ~ 8 hours? There are some options, maybe not too many which will leave you well-rested for the following day?

I dunno, I might stay at a hotel near the airport, then take a flight to USM the next day at a reasonable hour, like PG 129 at 09:55 or PG 125 at 10:20, I mean, you may not be able to check in to your hotel on Koh Samui until noon-ish anyway.

The Novotel was looking pricey, so our thinking was that if check-in opened early, we'd bum around airside before departure (though neither of us have been to Thailand or the BKK domestic terminal). On the other side of the flight, the plan was to drop our bags off at the hotel before-check in and take in the local area. My fiance doesn't like when I book day flights, and it looks like there's a 6AM flight some days, so she said she preferred that one.

I was thinking more of the nice, comfy hotels in nearby Lat Krabang, which are on the order of 1,000 - 1,500 THB with free airport transport.

You're not going to be able to remain "airside", you'll have to clear Arriving Immigration, get your bags, then clear Customs.

There is but one terminal, albeit with a domestic "wing and half-ish" and bus-gates.

Then you will be landside until whenever. After domestic check-in, clearing security you will be in the domestic airside space. Can't see that happening much before 04:00-ish?

If your fiancee wants to remain up for 24 hours and trundle around the airport - there is a food court (for locals) and some food options on level 3/landside, and some hard plastic chairs for her comfort - then go for it.

Yes, it looks like there is a 06:00 departure, it had already left today when I looked so missed that one, PG 103. That seems to qualify as a "day flight" so not sure if that's acceptable?
