Site hangs Safari, Chrome on iPad

I can't tell if this is related to the ad issue in another thread, but want to post it here in case it is not.

Mostly I browse the United forum. Any pages there cause the browser to freeze and become non-responsive within 5-15 seconds of the page loading, usually as I scroll down. If it is because of a particular ad, I'll never tell because I can't get far enough down to see anything except the ever-prevalent United Explorer card ads. At that point, the page will not scroll and the browser is more or less hung but I'm usually able to kill the tab that is frozen after a bit.

Happens in both Safari and Chrome on the full site. Everything is running the latest versions (ios 8.4.1, chrome is current).

As I mostly use that device for FT reading, my viewership is down quite a bit lately.

No, it is not just you! It happens to me on my iPad (Safari) and my iPhone (Safari). I have the same problem whether I'm in the mobile version of FT or not.

As far as I can tell, it's the Mileage Plus Explorer card ad with the plane taking off that does it. Once the plane has taken off, the page is again functional.

I get this ad in forums other than United, too.

Happening to me as well as of the past week, and it's maddening. I'm finding Chrome is slightly better at recovering. Safari will freeze for minutes, sometimes crashing entirely.

I also mostly use the UA forum, so we may have found the culprit. Could someone from FT tech leadership look into it?

I've been getting it in the UA Forum as well. Has happened the most when reading the delayed/cancelled international flights thread.

Playing around some more last night it looks to be UA-forum specific. Other fora behaved normally.

I'm seeing the slowness right here in the tech forum. As observed earlier in the thread, it may be the UA ad that many of us see sitewide when we spend time in the UA forum.

Having the same problem

Been having the same problem on the United forum for the last 5 days. Site freezes up within 10 -15 seconds when I try to read any posting. Using safari on my iPad. Help please.

See my post above yours.

I'm using both Chrome and Safari on an iPad and an iPad Air 2 without any problems. This would tend to indicate it's a malfunctioning ad, possibly.

Something is still amiss. Using Safari on iPad just now, I observed half a dozen instances in which "A problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded" while browsing threads on the UA forum before finally giving up. The site is also rendering much slower than any other site I visit, with scrolling and links taking several seconds to register.

The moment I close FT, everything returns to normal.

Still there for me tonight. First thread in the UA forum--basically the same behavior (maybe it took a few seconds longer to freeze).

Still having problems here too.:confused::confused:

Nothing going on at my end, UA|MP forum loading quickly and seamlessly. (The difference is I am using an ad free interface from my Moderator login. I'm suspecting an advert related process here.)

It's good to see we have a fairly solid idea what the problem is. I work in digital content development, so I don't believe in ad blockers -- sites have to make money, after all. :)

Here's hoping a solution comes along very soon that won't send members running toward ad block plug-ins.
