I posted this morning that I did not receive any email notifications last night. That post appears to have gone missing, so I'm repeating it here.

FT is very slow in Vista

I'm running Vista Business on my new Vaio SZ440 laptop. FT (and some other, but not all, websites) run very slow -- it can take up to 10 seconds to load a page. This is true whether I use FireFox or Internet Explorer. However, if I run XP inside of a Microsoft Virtual Machine, FT pages load like lightning -- clearly, there is something specific to Vista that is slowing things down.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm going to answer my own question, because this will, almost certainly, come up for others.

The problem is with Webroot's SpySweeper, an otherwise excellent malware protection program that is supposed to be Vista compatible. If you leave the "Common Ad Sites" shield on, FT will take forever to load. It may be because of a Javascript issue and it may be because of the number of ads on FT -- I'm not sure. However, turning off that shield restores zippy webpage loading in Vista.

I was gonna say, it can't be Vista per se because I've run FT on a Vista platform and it has been just fine (and it would be weird that one particular web page runs slow while others run fast). Glad you figured out what the trouble is!

I just received two frustrating "support" emails from Webroot. Both suggested, "update to the latest version of SpySweeper" (which I'm already running and reported to them). What's particularly galling is that I identified the specific issue for them, i.e. the Common Ad Sites shield on sites like FT where there are a lot of ads and javascript. SpySweeper just dropped off my, "recommend to others" list because of this.

I haven't received any email notifications today of PMs or new replies to subscribed threads. (And it's not just that I've suddenly become less popular )

Slow internet response for FT

I've noticed a lot of slowness today, but it doesn't appear to be the usual issue. I've tried pinging FT, along with a number of other sites. FT is, consistently, erratic with a lot of time-outs, whereas such varied sites as Google and my own personal website return consistent and much-faster responses.

This looks like it may be a problem with FT's host.

Anyone?

I can tell you exactly what's wrong

As a web designer, I can say without hesitation that the reason things are so slow is the new banner ad rotator that has replaced the pop-under window.

There is a several second delay that FORCES you to watch the ad.

Given the choice between an unsuppressable pop-under, and a 3 second delay on almost every page, I'll choose

NOT COMING TO THIS SITE!

Except to see if these extremely irritating practices have ceased...
