Thank you so much LRD for these tips. They work absolutely perfectly, and that hideous/insidious FB thing is GONE GONE GONE

Thanks again, LRD! If I filter out the header, I lose the MyFlyerTalk logo link that I've become used to using. I'll have to get used to using the one in the Nav Buttons Bar.

On a related note about cleaning up my FT pages, I only just now realized that I could collapse the "Quick Reply" and "Posting Rules" boxes at the bottom of the pages. I wonder what else have I never stumbled upon like this?

Chrome .......

In addition to FF, I also use Chrome. In Chrome, I have an extension called ....... (by a different author than FF's ....... Plus) with the following filter to remove the display of the FB Connect line:
DIV[class="tborder"] www.flyertalk.com

I don't think that this actually stops the scripts from making the call to FB's servers, though.

Here also are cosmetic filters for removing FT's header and footer:
div[id="header"] www.flyertalk.com
div[id="footer"] www.flyertalk.com

I've started a poll about FB connect in Community buzz:
Does Facebook Connect enhance your FT online Community experience?

Initial results are interesting. Out of the first 24 voters, 45% have instituted blocking software. I'm sure in many cases this also means we're blocking the ads, which would mean this is really backfiring on IB- instead of increasing eyeballs this move may be decreasing ad views and revenue.

There is now a setting the site options to disable the Facebook Connect.

MyFlyerTalk > Edit Options

(it's at the bottom)

What exactly does it do if you choose to hide the option?

It removes the button from the top, and it removes the FB .js from loading.
