The following hotels have been voted as the worst in the Starwood portfolio of hotels.

Hotels with a low number of votes, and there is a majority that only have one vote each, should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Moreover, several hotels have had significant renovations since the original vote(s) were cast. As a result, negative votes for those properties should be discounted.

> June 2014: Bath towels stank. Night staff at front desk were curt and unkempt -- a guy had crooked glasses and dandruff all over his suit jacket. He frowned several times while processing my check in. No smile or welcome, verbally or nonverbally. While I was checking in he received phone calls from several guests, and he refused every request swiftly, firmly, and without apology: "No. What?! No. Housekeeping is closed." I trashed the hotel in a post-stay survey and received an apology from the manager with a vague offer of a future room upgrade. No compensation.

> May 2013: Sloppy housekeeping; room had trash left behind by previous guest. Broken AC; maintenance fixed for the afternoon, but it broke again overnight. Front desk, upon checkin, claimed no king rooms available (only doubles) despite non-suite king rooms for sale on spg.com. They assigned me a room by the elevator where I could hear nonstop dings and whooshes from the elevator shaft. Front desk was staffed by an uppity fellow who never cracked a smile. What a joke of a 12k points redemption.

> December 2012: Moldy shower tiles. Some rooms were so tiny you'd think you were in Tokyo. Irritating whoosh-whoosh from elevator shaft if room was close to elevator. Bad insulation of sound from hallways. Low class clientele - loud and boisterous folk who enjoyed bragging at 3 a.m. about sexual conquests. Low class front desk - when I asked for a room change because of noise, they asked me if my room was dirty.

> December 2014 (Royal Beach Club room): Heavenly bedding in name only, if at all. Mattress lacked the signature plush comfort; linens were thin and scratchy, pillows were flat and unsupportive. I slept on my bended arm and in the fetal position for warmth. Woke up sore and exhausted every morning despite 9-10 hours of sleep. Lounge breakfast was bland; happy hour was a joke -- buffet ran out within minutes of replenishment. If you wanted the hot item you had to keep tabs on the staff and hustle to the front of the line ASAP when a line began to form.

Sheraton City Center, Philadelphia

This property is disgusting. Dirty carpet in the rooms, dirty showers/tubs (with hair in them!), dust everywhere.

Service was equally terrible. Ratings are clearly a problem, as every employee was wearing button that read "10." When asked about the buttons, they tell you that "10" is the rating you should give them if you receive a guest survey.

I was attending a large meeting at the hotel and a Sheraton employee even had the gumption to address our group and plead for a "10" rating, should we receive guest surveys. This was greeted with murmured laughter throughout the room...

Wow! I've never heard of a hotel pleading for good reviews out of pity. Interesting tactic. However the fact is they're being paid to deliver a service, they're not friends doing us a favor, to whom we need to be grateful.

Plus the train runs right past the hotel at all hours. I felt like Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinnie

I think they took that property on with the intention of demolishing it for a big new redevelopment, which then fell apart when the economy imploded.

Gumption. Always been one of my favorite words. (OK, I know, way OT. Mods, delete this post if you must....)

I don't see anything that shows the Park Lane London as a 5* establishment. Where is this?

Sheraton Dallas. Where do I start with this one?

-Was scolded by the club lounge attendant for no apparent reason other than that I dared to enter at 5:10 p.m., which apparently was too early, since food and refreshments were nowhere to be found (was told, "you must not travel much").

-Ordered breakfast in the evening and instructed room service to leave my order at the door around 7:00 a.m. Asked them please not to knock--simply leave by the door, charge to my room, and I will leave a cash tip for the server. Guest services said no problem. I got a call at 6:00 a.m. the next morning asking if I wanted coffee, followed by loud banging on my door at 7:05 (I realize that my request might have been complicated, and I don't blame the associate who knocked for this snafu).

-The next day, ordered a side of eggs and wheat toast at the hotel restaurant. The order took an hour to arrive, and it came without toast.

-Colleagues and I waited an hour for a cocktail in the lounge on two separate occasions. When we politely inquired about the whereabouts of the server, we were told that we were "hollering" and to be patient.

-Hotel sports bar was infested with flies.

-Room was dated, paint peeling, etc.

-Checkout machines were inoperable (not a big deal, but added to the list of problems).

Etc., etc., etc.

I have never complained about a property before, but I wrote a polite note with the online survey listing these and other issues. Received 2,000 Starpoints compensation and a very nice letter back, with a follow-up e-mail from the general manager asking me to let her know next time I am in Dallas, as she would like to personally sit down with me and discuss my experience.

I had a bad experience at the hotel, but I greatly appreciated the response when I brought it up with management.

Safe travels,
I suppose this is one of the problems with threads/lists like these: I have stayed at three of the five properties you've just listed - Westin Halifax, Sheraton Bahamas, Park Lane London - and have had excellent stays.

In fact, I have stayed at all three of these properties not once, but multiple times each, and would not hesitate to return.

So, while I don't dispute some properties run hot and cold, and while I am sure the negative reviews are legitimate, I would caution anyone from taking the 'list' as gospel, especially if the posters are basing their judgements on just one stay. I say this even though I have personally written off a couple of properties after only one stay myself.

Still, the lesson for me - having seen these three on the 'list' - is to take the 'list' as guidance only. As always, these assessments cans somtimes be very objective - even my own "wonderful" stays at these very same properties.

Cheers,

Agreed with you that OPs should take this thread with a grain of salt. After all, "worst SPG experience" is an individual/subjective assessment. However, I can also see it cutting the other way. In theory, if enough individual posters write about a particular property being their worst stay ever, then there should be an overwhelming response in time. Reading the individual property threads are a better indicator of what to expect. The SLS thread is a classic example of this.

Sheraton Nassau and 4Pts Allentown

Two for the hall of shame:

Sheraton Nassau at Cable Beach: we went for three nights on a cash and points stay and were so disappointed. The lobby stunk like bad perfume and the rooms (we tried three of them) had a dingy, dusty smell that roused up my allergies. The beach was unattractive and had what looked like telephone poles mounted a few meters offshore. After one night, I fought them to get all money and points back (after 15 minutes of fighting) and we went to the Atlantis.

4Points Allentown: having to go there for business, this is the only Starwood in the area. It is near the airport and is a pretty old and dingy hotel. Now, when returning, I stay at a Hilton chain hotel since they have some nicer and newer ones.

I've always been upgraded to the massive suite (I don't know if there's more than one -- I've always been put in the same room) in Allentown and have always been treated very well by the staff. Yes, the property is no longer new. But it's usually fairly inexpensive and I've stayed there at least 5-6 times without a problem. My parents live within a half hour and when I visit, this is where I stay.
