1. What requests can they fulfill?
Generally, butlers can unpack/pack your suitcases, press a few pieces of laundry at no charge, act as a single POC for your requests to many different hotel departments, and other hotel-related services.
2. Should I tip my butler? How much?
The prevailing thought process in the thread suggests butlers should at least be tipped for "above and beyond" type service, and potentially more at your discretion and accounting for local tipping customs.

You get a free "pressing" of your clothes when you arrive, and I especially enjoyed the morning coffee, pressed the old fashioned way. It's like room service you don't have to order daily. Wife had some chai tea I think, also delivered on time, every day. Coffee service was complimentary. I was at the SR Monarch Beach, in a SR Suite (very nice BTW).

I've used the butler service on the "butler floors" of Sheraton Park Tower in London to have shirts ironed in the morning. Just call the butler, and they'll have your shirt ironed in 5 mins.

Used butler service at SR Monarch Beach as well
I also had a recent experience with the butler at SR Monarch Beach. Was in an Executive Suite and mornings included French Press coffee service with biscotti and newspaper.
All I had to do was pick up the phone, press the butler button, and request the coffee service. Arrived within 5 minutes or so and was complimentary (except for the tip).
At this hotel, the butler service is only available for suites. I'm sure there are certain exceptions though if the price or loyalty is right.

funny story here....
was in NY and had a reservation at the westin, which at the time, shared the building with St. Regis.
This is one of the few times I actually had a printout of my reservation. My spg might have been gold, might not. I got to the counter and they had no reservation. I whipped out the copy. They were sold out and put us in a St. Regis suite with butler. It was rather funny considering we were there ONE night and packed in gym bags only.

Wonderful St Regis Butler service in Singapore
I am naive and totally inexperience but I want to get it right. The St Regis website describes their Butler Service as “Ensuring every guest’s stay is uniquely tailored to his or her needs, the signature St. Regis Butler sets the stage for an experience that caters to individual requests, no matter how great or small, at any hour of the day and night.” Please tell me how you used the St Regis Butler Service. Thx.

What is the appropriate way to tip a butler for their service? After each of these things or at the end of the stay? And what do you recommend?

Basically pressing at the Park Tower London.
But I also got "free pressing" at the Sheraton Towers Hong Kong, and I didn't care that a butler didn't pick up and deliver.
I also had a butler once bring a vase for flowers which I purchased and brought to the room.
Also, I had a severely sprained ankle in Beijing while staying at the STR and the butler brought me ice and called the hotel manager who offered me a free bottle of red Bordeaux and a cheese plate. That sure helped with the pain.
I don't think any of these things are really butler services versus services that would generally be provided by other hotel staff.
I haven't used unpacking or packing, but that's one thing that I think falls exclusively within the butler realm.

Spent two nights at the DC St. Regis in June.
Wasn't offered a butler, no shirt ironing, no coffee.
You guys really need to keep me more on top of these things.
I just thought it was a nice luxury hotel with REALLY dark rooms.

At the St. Regis Aspen a butler came with my suite. Upon arrival, she escorted us to our room. We had requested to have 2 cribs in the room for our 2 small children. Upon entering the room, she noticed only 1 of the 2 cribs actually made it in. She ran downstairs and promptly returned with a second crib, along with two FAO Schwartz teddy bears for my kids. During our stay, she packed, unpacked, brought the kids milk and cookies each night (without prompting), pressed garments daily for us and also made our dinner reservations each night we were there. I looked at it as having a personal concierge.
At the St. Regis Houston, we stayed on the Astor floor which provides butler service. Our butler also escorted us to our room here, and we happened to mention that we were attending a concert downtown. 15 minutes later, our butler showed up at our door with directions to the venue. Nice touch considering we hadn’t asked for them. Of course we took full advantage of the garment pressing, coffee/tea with wake up call, and also utilized our butler to make dinner reservations for us, as well as spa appointments. So far, my experience with the St. Regis Butlers are ^^

It cannot take much luggage and for a family of 4, we had a cab following with our luggage in.
Superb drive...the real benefit was the VIP airport service. We were met at the gate by a motorized cart that took us ( 2 adults/2 children) thru the terminal to the VIP lounge.Customs occured very quickly before we waited in the lounge (ten minutes) while they found our luggage and walked out the side door to the waiting Bentley.No queues and we were on our way about 20 minutes after we landed! I am not sure if the VIP greet is part of the Bentley transfer but it is worth asking.
