IMO its an average property, meaning not some place to really look forward to but enjoyable as long as you set realistic expectations. I got an upgrade to a junior/executive suite type room but only after a lot of hassles, detailed in my brief review above. The hotel grounds and pool are pretty nice and when I was there in early March, reasonably empty, so no problem at all getting chairs and some privacy. The Sheraton is connected to the Wyndham, which is a little run down, but does have a couple shops with reasonably priced water/soda/beer. Food is pretty expensive, but I found the lunch buffet at the Sheraton to be of reasonable value, relatively speaking.

The all inclusive part is an option I didn't look into too much for this past trip, however I remember it being quite pricey when I looked into it last year. If you're willing to venture off property via taxi, I can't image the all inclusive being a good deal unless you are drinking a lot.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping it is better than the Westin Lucaya- it wasn't BAD but it wasn't great, either. And since I don't drink, it sounds like all-inclusive is not a great idea, and after reading more on this hotel I am keeping expectations low so I won't be too disappointed. I have to take 3 planes to get there, but after this trip I'll have hit both Plat with Starwood AND my Plat status with Continental for next year.

I booked a "luxury room" so I am hoping I get a suite upgrade, but after all the trouble it took in Aruba and Lucaya, I'm not counting on anything. I'm happy to hear there are places to buy water and such, as I cannot afford a mini-bar situation, and don't want to have to check a bag with my own water and snacks-with 3 flights each way, it's like inviting disaster!
Thanks!

It's ok, Platinum benefits were severely lacking. The redeeming factor was that it has been recently renovated so the rooms and especially the common areas were decent. The hotel was also pretty empty when I was there which was nice.

Set reasonable expectations and you'll be satisfied - just don't expect high end.

I will post a full review once I get a chance to upload my photos to flickr. I stayed back in August, for a friend's bachelor party. Since it was only a two-night stay, and the hotel wasn't busy, I was able to talk my way into an upgrade to a non-standard suite. It was on the corner of the hotel closest to the beach, with a full wrap-around balcony. One bedroom, two baths, huge living room, and kitchenette. Probably about 900 sq. ft. total. Will post a photo review once I get them up.

I haven't been able to find an answer on this. Our youngest son may be working at Blue Lagoon Island for a week. If we stay at this property while he is there, can he find a daily boat from Nassau that goes there?

Any recent stays here? Is a suite worth booking? Some good promo's going on (4th night free and $100 resort credit, etc). Trying to decide between a stay here, or a Mexico all-inclusive trip for late January 09.

Well, my stay didn't end up being the best, but mostly because I was there during Tropical Storm Hannah, a day before Hurricane Ike. The hotel shut everything down over a day before the storm, including room service. I still don't know WHY they shut it down SO early (about 36 hours before AND the storm didn't hit that hard for almost 2 full days) but I did appreciate the one buffet they opened for all guests at no cost. It wasn't food for picky people like me, but they really tried and the workers there were VERY friendly.

I was there 3 nights and the first night I arrived alone (hubby was supposed to come for his birthday but as a meteorologist, he was forced to stay behind) to find a rather rude desk clerk. She didn't care if I wanted a suite or if I should be given one as a Plat, she asked me what I needed with one! In all my years as a Plat, I have never been asked or told that I "don't need a suite since you're only 1 person."

One of the other people overheard her and half-heartedly checked for suites while I was there. It was early September and they were not even close to full capacity. (It was pretty dead-most people left the day I got in.) He said they'd call if a suite became available. Okay. So I went to bed, woke to the storm, and stayed in my room or the casino next door the whole next day.

On my way back to my room I stopped and asked again about a possible suite upgrade and a very nice lady (I WISH I recalled her name!) found me one right away. The patio furniture was crowding the living room but I managed to move around it. She said I'd be moved if the storm got too bad, and I was fine with that. I stayed there 2 nights, with some bad wind and rain but I slept through most of the storm. I played blackjack at night and did very well, and despite never seeing the sun and not having room service, I enjoyed my suite and the people I met at the casino and the free buffet.

I'm heading back next week and am hoping to run into that nice lady again. The suite I stayed in was really lovely, and surrounded by a wrap-around balcony. I would LOVE to stay there when the sun is actually out. What a view it must have. And it was well set up with a bedroom and a walk-in closet (I was going to hide there if the storm hit fast and furious) and even a small kitchenette area with fridge.

As for the fee for luggage, it was there. I still carried my own, as I only had two small bags, but they do hit you with a lot of fees. I'm looking forward to seeing the place in the daylight (I flew home in the few hours between storms and hurricane) and enjoying the beach. The casino next door was a great plus during the bad weather, and I won more money than I've ever won at any casino. I guess a hurricane is good for something!

I haven't fully reviewed the hotel because I couldn't see the pools or beach in the rain, and because so many of the restaurants were closed. I couldn't even fully photograph the suite because of the patio furniture, nor could I enjoy the balcony. I haven't decided yet if it'll be a place I recommend or not. I wasn't able to check out the business center (if there was one) or go over our checklist. But it wasn't a BAD place. In fact, once I got the suite upgrade, I was happy just to have a place to spread out. And they are connected to a casino via a tunnel. So it wasn't a bad place for me to wait out the storms.

Now, we'll see how it goes next week. Personally, I'm hoping for some sun!

Here are some photos from the Suite I got upgraded to on a 3-Day Stay at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort. It's not a "Standard" suite, so any upgrade to this suite will require some sweet-talking...

Dining Nook

As you can see, it's a fairly nice room. I wasn't disappointed with this upgrade on the cheap-o low-season rate I snagged in August for a standard room (Sub-$200/night, IIRC). It was an excellent base-of-operations for a friend's bachelor-party weekend.

Just had a 4 night stay over NYE. Arrived at 1PM to a long check in line and only 2 desk clerks checking in guests. Finally got to the front of the line and asked if there were any Platinum Upgrades available. Was told I was "upgraded" to an ocean view room on the 7th floor. After furthur inspection of the map on the back of the door, ALL rooms have an ocean view.

The room was ready and recently upgraded with sweet sleeper bed and flat screeen TVs. They didn't carry any HD channels, but you picked up Miami stations. The balcony was large enough but had a solid front so when seated you couldn't see the view.

When walking into the room the maid popped in and said she would be bringing towels shortly. I didn't think anything of it and changed into a swimsuit to head to the pool. Stopped by the towel hut and told that they were temporarily out and to check back in 30 minutes. Headed to the Edgwater Bar for lunch and drinks.

Figuring they had to be restocked with towels after lunch I walked back over and given the same song and dance. "come back in30 minutes." The water was heated but with the breeze a towel was really needed. I had been waiting over an hour at this point and asked to speak to the manager. He was pretty unhelpful but finally found me a towel in the back that they don't normally give to guests since it had a permanent stain.

Next morning we went out to the pool again and they had the same towel issue. At this point I was seriously wondering how a BEACH RESORT can run out of towels two days in a row. Went to the front desk and asked to speak to the manager. She completely unsympathetic and had no explanation, nor did she offer anything to resolve the problem.

On NYE we went shopping and were going to get ready for our evening out and came back to a clean room with NO TOWELS. Called down and apparently no clean room towels were delivered to the hotel. No one was even answering the guest services line since everyone was calling for towels.

The poolside Dolphin Grill serves the basic sandwiches. Sandwich, chips plus softdrink and tip came to about $17 per person.

The only nice restaurant is Amici, which we didn't find to be terribly good. The service was mediocre and the restaurant lacked ambiance. The restaurants across the way at the Wyndham were better. We had NYE dinner at Moso and found it quite tasty.

The casino next door had horrible cocktail service considering the casino was pretty empty. Table minimums the entire time we were there were $15.

Angry

Just returned from five days at this property and it was collectively probably the worst experience I have had at a Starwood property. My advice is STAY AWAY, FAR FAR AWAY.

First, when we made the reservations, we were explicitly told that one of our rooms would have a separate private sleeping area. We double-checked on this, because it was important for this family trip. The SPG site shows only one award room at a time (in this case, our cash and points room), so I called to check and verified the nature of the other room. We verified again that our reservation was for a suite with a "separate private sleeping area." Those were the reservation agent's words, not mine.

Despite this, when we checked in, it was a standard "junior suite", which was nothing more than a standard resort room with an additional seating area. The property and SPG were completely uninterested in doing anything for us, so I have taken it up with Starwood "corporate services", who told me they are looking into it. I want them to pull the recording of the call, since any error in the description of the room was certainly not min. We'll see what happens - spending 20k points a night for 4 nights was an absolute waste for a slightly larger room.

In my opinion, resort fees were adequately disclosed, and not out of line with other resort properties of similar quality. I thought that the food and drink services were reasonably good, although a little pricey, but that's the Bahamas. Of course, 15% tip is added to everything, but I am not that offended by that. Overall, food and drink were ok, but I preferred the restaurants in the Wyndham and the rest of the island to the Sheraton.

As for the rest of the problems:

We had to have our room keys reset 10-15 times, and they kept blaming us - "Where are you keeping your room key?" If it's in a purse, put it in your pocket, but don't put it in your wallet. If it's in your pocket, put it in your wallet. Etc, etc. Other guests though we were rude for not wanting to wait in the ABSURD lines to do anything at the front desk. Usually there was at least a 15 minute wait. I can a property having see one or two problems with room keys, but it continued happening and there was obviously something wrong with the electronic lock or SOMETHING. It became a bit of an absurd joke that this property is so inept about the locks, but I would sure like to have that two hours of of each day back. I will note that none of the housekeeping staff needed much convincing to let us into our room, and that doesn't make me feel that great about the security of the property. But I guess they got to know us after the first half-dozen times our keys wouldn't work.

This property also seems to have a real problem with laundry, especially towels. They ran out our beach towels every day that we were there. No apologies, just more or less a message of "tough luck." Most days, we didn't get clean bath towels in our room until 6pm, which made getting ready for dinner a real hassle. We tried to keep our towels and just hang them up, but housekeeping kept taking them. When they were left outside our room, other guests took them, as I guess they wanted to get ready for dinner, too. Front desk was COMPLETEly unresponsive to any towel issues - it was like they didn't even care.

Housekeeping staff totally ignores "do not disturb" placards - we were awoken from afternoon naps twice out of two times.

Our air conditioning only worked intermittently, and only on high. Not a huge hassle, but it was annoying to come back to a hot room and not be able to keep the air at a comfortable level without opening and closing the balcony door all the time.

Wired internet access in the rooms (included in the resort fees) only worked occasionally. Lobby wireless worked well enough but was very slow with 20 or so users (who must have also found that the wired access in the rooms didn't work).

Overall, I'm used to "island time" and don't expect service like in a premium urban hotel, but this was a bit ridiculous. Every second I spent outside of the property was a pleasure, and I loved everything about Nassau. Every second at this Starwood property was a hassle - I would never stay there again and think that it was a total waste of Starwood points. Buyer Beware!

I will be in the Bahamas for 3 nights and while I'd really like to stay at Atlantis, booked this on C&P for purely financial reasons. Is there enough to do at this hotel and in the local area to keep busy?

More importantly, how easy is it to get to Atlantis from here (hopefully without renting a car).

Any other suggestions on a better compromise?

20 USD one way in a taxi. It is a zone fare, plus you pay the $1 toll for crossing the bridge.

Does anyone know if there is a car rental agency/counter in the hotel or nearby? We'll also be in the Bahamas for three nights and would like to rent a car for maybe a day to explore the island and drive to Atlantis.
