It doesn't happen every year, it's an easter egg. No disappointment for me since I don't expect it.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean it should happen every year.

I view/have viewed this "gift" as a perk, that should not be expected.

The only thing we should expect, is when someone will start a Will there be an elite re-qualification gift for 2015 thread!

I agree 100%. My only issue was with the "doesn't happen every year" statement.

When something happens every year for 8 consecutive years, one comes to expect that it will also happen the 9th year. And when that something doesn't happen, one becomes disappointed.

I believe this resulted from all of the fuss that happened with last year's gift.

This.

I've never been given such a great gift by any of my loyalty programs and probably never will again - likely as a result of the "fuss". Such a shame.

Indeed. 2009-2012 gifts were nominal and not worthy even to start a thread about. One of those years it was though also a photo album which we rather liked.
2008 was nice -- used for a free night at E&R in Venice. Still, sheer luck because redemption period was so short. Same with 2005-2007 -- I think managed to fit in one stay at 1/2 redemption in 2006. Very tight. The rest just expired.
If something comes, expect $25 or 1K points.

There were lots of complaints that the expiration rules were not clear - some people believed they could stockpile the benefit for as long as they wanted. And the usual complaints that it favored a specific type of stay over others.
