Yeah, but that doesn't mean it should happen every year.
I view/have viewed this "gift" as a perk, that should not be expected.
The only thing we should expect, is when someone will start a Will there be an elite re-qualification gift for 2015 thread!

I agree 100%. My only issue was with the "doesn't happen every year" statement.

When something happens every year for 8 consecutive years, one comes to expect that it will also happen the 9th year. And when that something doesn't happen, one becomes disappointed.

2008 was nice -- used for a free night at E&R in Venice. Still, sheer luck because redemption period was so short. Same with 2005-2007 -- I think managed to fit in one stay at 1/2 redemption in 2006. Very tight. The rest just expired
.If something comes, expect $25 or 1K points.

There were lots of complaints that the expiration rules were not clear - some people believed they could stockpile the benefit for as long as they wanted... and these beliefs were supported on more than a few occasions by SPG representatives, the expiration date was only ever referenced on FT and MP, and the offer did not actually expire on the date referenced on the forums. And the usual complaints that it favored a specific type of stay over others.
