Here's the moment they informed ATC after it first happened:

"Southwest 1380 has an engine fire, descending"
"Southwest 1380, are you descending right now?"
"Yes sir, we're single-engine, we're descending"

The female pilot sounds shaken, much calmer on approach on the other snippet I posted. This recording begins at 15:04:45Z on ZNY sector 10 on the liveatc.net audio archive.

Was there something else the person filming could have done instead? Seems like he was/could be communicating to love ones via Facebook/SMS/iMessage/WhatsApp etc. If accident was fatal, video could have been useful to accident investigation. So I would say kudos to the guy.

Southwest's only other fatality incident was a child on the ground.

USA Today - One dead after Southwest flight lands in Philadelphia with blown engine

Sadly, this is the first fatality of a passenger on board a Southwest flight in the history of the airline involved with an accident of the aircraft. I've sat in that spot so many times right near the engine on WN and other carriers (mainly AA)...awful situation. Thoughts go out to the deceased and their loved ones. Hopefully NTSB/WN/CFM (engine manufacturer)/Boeing et al can find what caused it and work to prevent it from happening again.

Early on there were reports that another passenger had a heart attack while this was going on. It's unclear if the passenger that has passed away was the heart attack victim or was the one sitting by the window that blew out.

Not to sound insensitive but why wasn't this passenger wearing their seat-belt? The death should not fall on SW airlines, nor should that incident with the heart attack.

Wow! That's very sad. I'm sure his entire family will claim his body. They will send his body back home.

Scary stuff. Kudos to the crew, and thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased passenger.

Can anyone tell what row the blown out window is in? Looks like somewhere in the 14-16 range?

WAY too early analysis indicates same failure, engine as late October's incident. NTSB has yet to issue ANY findings on the earlier event that may have prevented today's tragedy. Unlike today, the debris from last October's incident hit the fuselage, did not take out a window. Combined with the recent 60 Minutes accusations that the FAA is a bit too cozy with Allegiant, it appears regulatory agencies may not be acting in the best interest of the flying public.

RIP to the victim. They definitely will be retiring the 1380 flight number and if they don't write it off, the N772SW tail number as well.
