I think the Platinumcard works excellent for upgrades

I also had nice weekends in an SL350 (booking E-Class)
...and even the simple Gold card is good for decent upgrades. I always book IDMR (A3) or sometimes SDMR (A4), depending which one is cheaper, and never ever recieved anything lower than PDMR. The last weeks I had an E270, 2x BMW530, 2x A6 2,7.

That made me switching over from Europcar

I usually rent once a week and always rent at city offices, never at airports. Maybe thats the reason....

I rent a lot cars at Sixt (sold my own car a year ago) and always a city station on a short time frame.
If you choose options like navigation and automatic transmission, the chances to get another car than requested are quite good and I am only Gold.

From my experinces with them in the past, it was quite good to get another car than booked if you do this only a short time in advance. Since a few month, it seems, they have upgrade the system showing the availability of cars, because some groups are not available at every Sixt Station and some Stations show no availability for requested dates.

My experiences with them in this year (reservation was made the time 10 - 25 hours in advance); but in this short time frame not every car is available.
I book always the lowest or second lowest available categorie or a special group if I for example need a station wagon. I always choose as option Navigation and Automatic transmission (I know, a Fiest is not availble with nor Automatic neither Navigation)

Sixt Dsseldorf Central Station
booked Ford Fiesta (ECMR) got VW Golf
booked Mercedes A (CLMR) got Volvo V 50
booked Audia A 2 (CDMR), got Mercedes CLS automatic transmission
booked Audi A 3 got Audi A 3
booked VW Passat Variant (SWMR), got BMW X 3 (but rejected, as an SUV is not covered by the insurance included in my credit card and got as I need a Station Wagon a Ford Mondeo (downgrade)
booked Audi A 3 (IDMR) got BMW 1 Series (no upgrade), which had after an hour driving a breakdown (electronic malfunction, no ESP, ABS, Power Steering, etc), changed to a SLK for the rest of a sunny weekend

Sixt Frankfurt
booked Ford Fiesta (ECMR), got Mercedes A
booked VW Golf (CLMR), got Mercedes C with automatic transmission

Sixt Moers
booked Audi A 2 (CDMR) got Mercedes A

Sixt Berlin
booked Smart Forfour (IVMR), got Audi A 3

The LH Forum is no longer the appropriate place for threads about Sixt. Indeed, it might be helpful if those threads were moved here.

TalkBoard established this forum specifically to house threads about Sixt, Enterprise, and other car rental agencies which do not have their own forum.

I did Sixt twice in LHR and Sixt twice in AMS - with the Sixt Platinum card.

The rates weren't impressive... and I never got a rental upgrade. I am pretty disappointed with it, but have never used it in Germany.

Just did LHR again... reserved a compact, and got a compact (CDMR Class). They had C230 Kompressor coupes and several Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4's. I got a Honda Civic.... but I have to also note that the Civic's there were all automatic, spankin'-new, with moonroofs and leather interior!

That marks my 5th in a row where I didn't get a single upgrade. I often found lower prices thru Sixt's promotions. The car I got was only 35 for one day. If I used my Platinum rates, 33.70 a day, but let's not forget the Service Fee which is 20 a day, bringing the total to 53.70. I suspect I would get better rates by looking for promotions offered on sixt.co.uk

I plan to go to Germany over Thanksgiving and I have reserved a BMW 525i/530d - what are the chances I would get an upgrade to maybe.. let's say.. 730d? Through Europcar, anybody could get a rate of 150, in FRA. I have rented Audi A8, BMW 730d, Benz S350, and VW Phaeton from Europcar. Sixt does not advertise these cars on their website if you do not log in with your Sixt Platinum card. Once I logged in, the prices were significantly higher than 150,.

Doe anybody know what cars (XXAR or XDAR) are offered thru Sixt? Europcar apparently doesn't do Phaeton TDI or A8 TDI anymore and most cars there are no longer diesel. I really want to get the A8 V-10 TDI again or even a BMW 740d.

I recently reserved a "BMW 525d or similar" and got an Audi A 8 4.2 - although not the TDI (Berlin downtown station). They also offered me a Mercedes S 320.

Berlin downtown station had an Audi A8 or Benz S320? Wow... I am pretty sure FRA has far more choices for me to pick from. I only picked the 525i/530d to elevate my chances of getting an Audi A8.

the LH T&C dont exclude cars from Mercedes-Benz from insurance,
but
the LH Visa card coveres a maximum of 50000,- Euros, if the car is more worth than that and you have a full crash you have to pay for the difference e.g. car price is 60000 you pay 10000.

Why don't you give them a call (not too far) in advance and ask? Sometimes that works quite well. I would try calling the specific location where you reserved; phone numbers can be found here .

Thanks for the tip.
Again - thanks to Dovster and again good service from Sixt:

I have the Gold Card. Wrote Sixt an e-mail that I have an Ameniti Card and asked for a Platinum Card. Sixt answered and changed to Platinum within hours.

I reserve a C-Class Mercedes in FRA at Sixt (-35%). Same price like a Volvo V40 or Ford Mondeo from Sixti.

I did that for LHR and AMS, was always told, "It's based on availability and you have to be here to find out." That was usually within a day or two from the reservation date. I don't know if FRA will give me a similar response.

A DAY?!? That's a shocker. My reservation for one week says "...Excludes service fee of Euro 34.40 ...." I hope that's for the whole week

Why do I have the feeling that if it is Euro 34.40 per day that USAFAN will no longer be thanking me????
