The British Airways fleet: CONFIRMED aircraft deliveries, retrofits, and retirements

There is a sister thread which covers more general discussion including speculative ideas, linked below:
BA fleet developments: unconfirmed updates, speculation, and general discussion

In the past few years BA has had a large fleet renewal programme. The new aircraft enabled BA to retire the Boeing 737, 747, 767 and 777-200 (non-ER) fleets. Retirement of the older A319 and A320 aircraft is in progress. The A318 fleet has been retired without replacement. At BACF the E170 has been retired in favour of the E190.

This Wiki has been divided into:
  • Projected Fleet
  • New Arrivals
  • Retrofits
  • Retirements
  • Historical Fleet
(Click on the aircraft type, where there is a link, to go to the relevant details in this wikipost.)

IAG ordered another eight A320s and two A321s in January, some, all or none of which may be heading to BA.

The group's current orders with Airbus that haven't been allocated to airlines yet are 29 A320s, 23 A321s and 21 A330-900s.

With the new A320/1neo's coming in, I can't help but wonder when the first classic A320 will be leaving?

The eldest is not too much different age wise from the recently departed A319's. And I'm assuming the cycles are around the same too, having been used on similar routes around Europe.

Of course, a few have gone to Gatwick already, but still, the first retirement must only be a couple of years away at most.

EUOE, delivered in 2000 and the last A319 to be retired, had around 52,000 hours on it in August 2025. Comparing that with EUUA, B and C, delivered in 2002, all have circa 57,000 hours as of January 2026, so it could be that cycles are more significant here.

BA have been retiring A320s since 2006. The first was delivered in 1988. If the Planespotters website is accurate there have been 36 retirements of the A320-100 and -200 so far.

I suspect that 36 includes those transferred to the BA Euroflyer AOC. Scrapped directly after BA service would be the ten G-BUS* machines then G-MIDS/T/Y/X.

Not a single new build BA ordered A320-232 has been retired. Retirals have all been ex BMED, BMI or from the 1980s BCAL order. The 1st A320 BA ordered in their own right was from G-EUUA, and they do look after their own purchases.

But G-EUUA dates from 2001 (I remember it new, they had changed the tail logo), so we're nearly there.....

But G-EUUA dates from 2001 (I remember it new, they had changed the tail logo), so we're nearly there.....
Yes, this! I should have been clearer - I meant the first legacy A320. So not including ex BCAL, BMED or BMI.

I think it will be a while yet. As NEOs are delivered, there are further A319s to be retired together with the GATx subfleet at LGW, most of which are older than EUUA.

Curiously, BA have withdrawn about 20 A319 aircraft they bought new and some of these are younger than A320s still flying. I suppose the logic is the A320 is a bigger aircraft and there are routes from Heathrow where BA is confident the capacity will be sold and yields are higher.

Yet, each of these elderly Airbuses (319, 320 or 321) retained has had to be given quite detailed, costly and time-intensive checks - often overseas. BA must wish it had ordered more 320/321 neos more expeditiously.

The 2026 fleet plans show new aircraft arriving at a very pedestrian rate and relief from Vueling cascaded aircraft consequential to 737max still looks some time off.

You reap what you sow and this is the consequence of IAG policy 3-4 years ago with instigators of such a policy long gone!

ISTR after the last ten A320ceos were delivered, the ones with winglets, BA announced that they would be added to earlier A320s. So, yes, they knew that they would be around for quite a while longer! Strange that the retrofitting of the winglets didnt happen after all.

It did, those 10 (G-EUYO to YY) came without any sharklets and had them fitted some time afterwards.
